I want to say that Foxy Shazam is back—I really do, but this is not the same Foxy I think we all hoped we’d hear. Having been well over half a decade or so since their sudden deformation when it felt like they were just ready to commit to a new phase in their career. So when it was announced they were returning and reviving their style and sound that they are most known for, I was both excited and hesitant with whichever direction this may end up going.

It’s been six years since we last heard from Cincinnati glam rockers Foxy Shazam. After releasing the ultimately disappointing ‘Gonzo’ (or GON5O), they announced a hiatus to pursue personal projects, and give the band a break. So their announcement of a reunion and a new album in 2020 was something I welcomed with open arms; after all, their self titled third album was one of my favourite listens of all time.

While the performances and energy are here, the song writing and overall cohesive ideas are not. The whole experience of the record feels way too brief for its own good, and the low hanging fruit feel of the lyrics and crescendos and less than stimulating. Definitely their most lack-luster release, next to Church of Rock & Roll.
