Wasteland sounds like a bunch of apocalyptic nightmares that are forgotten the second i wake up and never come back to my mind ever again.

LICE's experimental post-punk studio debut is an interesting body of work that aims high for a esoteric, wasteland-ish and cosmic vibe that ultimately falls short due to a few factors that hold it down from actually being good.

The moment i started my listen i was quite impressed with the first 2 tracks, quickly making myself think that it might actually ... read more

Mixing isn't great and it's pretty boring, but it's ok.

I mean for modern experimental post-punk it doesn't necessary stand above the rest by for a debut, LICE does manage to create an engaging and ominous 43 minutes of post-punk with quite a noisy and cold atmosphere and with some nice technical ability especially the guitar work and the vocals enforcing this manic chaotic feeling, although i do find the vocals need to be sharpen up a bit and mixing is alright but WASTELAND is overall a good record and i did enjoy it but many bands have done this ... read more

As if some songs were inspired by my nightmares. I think this album is not a pure example of post-punk or a mediocre example of its kind. An experimental work that definitely doesn't appeal to me.
I have to choose my favorite song due to my concept, so I choose the song that moves the most calmly in the album.

It would be easy to shrug Wasteland off as just another post post-punk album, but I consider it the end of a promising start from a band who could go far. The originality may not be there, but when a debut album grabs your attention from the start and provides some memorable songs here and there, the only thing that matters in the end is flair. Lice has their own flair, and you can notice it here on Wasteland.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ: I originally wrote this review January 14th but accidentally hit delete review instead of delete rating when trying to change my rating and write an edit. I guess I'm still trying to work this website out lmao. Anyway, this was meant to be the edit:

I'll be honest, when I listened to this the first 5 times then wrote my review, I didn't get that much out of the album lyrically and conceptually. Not that I didn't want to, I just couldn't find any form of lyrics online ... read more

Great lyrics (mostly) but generic punk instruments and progressions, nothing new going on. Some interesting production.

This could have been a great post-punk record if the mix and mastering were executed by someone competent, skilled, or sane, at least. It’s mixed so badly it hurts my ears and makes me wanna cry. I gave up somewhere in the middle because I wasn’t able to listen to it. Like god, the sound on this LP is just so goddamn bad. And that’s such a shame because it has so much potential.

post-punk is one of my favorite genres. and this is a great post-punk release. full of energy, full of engaging and intriguing sounds, rough ideas, and heaviness intertwined with darkness that make the record such a fun ride. it's just pumping with pure, raw emotion that comes out in an awesome way. however, the vocals could be better. while i don't have that much of a problem with them, on some tracks they become off-putting. either way, though, the album is able to really make up for that one ... read more

Seems solid if you're a fan of LICE or similar bands, "Wasteland..." is noisy and heavy, with aggressive guitar cascades and modulated screams. If I was into that style of music I would probably appreciate this album more, but being really, really far from the genre I still found some solid elements in its experimentalism and variety, so I guess it's not bad, at least.

this record is so much about its writing that the lyrics were published as a booklet. and frankly it is fascinating stuff, functioning as a satire of satirical works and their place in our society, trying to tell a broad tale of how humanity can destroy itself with larger-than-life sci-fi characters and inventions only to almost literally be reduced to theatrical farce by its very end. clear tries to make itself clear on how it's dissatisfied with cheap blunt satire written by progressives to ... read more

I was somewhat pleasantly surprised to hear that the vocals were much less huskier than I expected them to be, but this album's few selling points ultimately aren't enough to stand out from the crowd of new experimental post-punk. Honestly, this remind me a lot of Squid, but 90% in all areas. Having said that there are few highlights, although the quality notibly fluctuates from track to track. R.D.C and Arbiter are good fun, but Espontáneo and Serata have little pay off for their ... read more

It had a lot of variation that I wasn't expecting. It could use some more experimentation and mixing improvements, but other than that it was solid all around.

I don't want to call this a waste of 45 minutes because I did enjoy it at some points. However, every time I started to enjoy a song, LICE would go and ruin it with something too experimental for my taste. Every time a song started going hard, LICE would slow it down in the very middle and ruin it. I was considering giving this album a 2/10, but it improved a lot towards the end, and I was actually able to enjoy a couple of songs the whole way through.

I want to like LICE, they’re clearly going to be a bigger name in the post-punk going forward and if an artist is going to stick around you should at least like them. I’ll admit, there are some cool ideas on “Wasteland - What Ails Our People Is Clear”. But honestly, I have too many reservations about this project to give it a positive review.

For one, the song structures on here are a mess. Anyone familiar with me knows how big of a deal song structure is for me as a ... read more

This album has it all for fans of the genre. A good 50/50 split between post & punk. Some songs go fucking hard - some fly by smoothly. Give me more of this shit please. I would like it in an injectable form if possible.

God damn I love this genre. Pardon me while I listen to every single release in the Post-Punk tag...

wasteland is such a surreal post-punk album. it's equally as experimental with its sound as it is ominous and disturbing and somehow catchy??? loved it, especially tracks like "arbiter" and "clear."

I'm not a big fan of the post-punk genre but the first time I listened to this album I really enjoyed it, the atmosphere so loud and strange that it made me really liked it but the second listen I realized how badly mastered this thing was. I tried to listen again I just couldn't. I hope they fix this and evolve musically as I think it's a very promising band

I'm very confused. I can't stop listening to this, despite my qualms with some of the vocal performance, this album really captures me. It's incredibly different from much of anything I've listened to before. I'm just kind-of...stuck listening to this album all the way through. Talk about audience retention. Also that cover art is wonderful, i've always been captured by surrealist visual art.
