Should we say that beauty is something relative or subjective? On the principle, I agree that the human being is generally dictated by charm and seduction towards anything. This is how we feel and our perception acts, defining what deserves to be appreciated or not. I've found myself surprised by this record in a way that I didn't expect.
I'll start this review off with a baseline thing: Evgeni Koroliov does a great job of performing this. I haven't consciously heard his work before, but he's clearly a very technically accomplished pianist and interprets these pieces with clarity and beauty. i generally like piano music, i love a lot of philip glass's songs, one of the few reasons in which i still enjoy the piano. the piano is one of those instruments where it's good every once in a while and not the entire album. and this has piano going for the entire album. for an hour and 20 minutes in fact. i will say that the first track is pretty decent, the melody is cool and it's very beautiful. the problem i have with literally every other track (maybe except for the ones in c minor) is ... read more
Reading Bach reviews on AOTY is an amazing experience that you should definitely do if you are alive in 2021.
I actually think that for Bach recordings this feels a bit listless? It just doesn't have the energy and contrast of Bach piano pieces that I love the most (Goldberg obvi). Something about the trilling here gets a little ornamental, but I guess I admire the general gesture. A pretty lovely set.
