With her debut album Diana releases one of the best R&B records of the 70s. For the most part the production has aged well, her voice is sweet and welcoming and the choice of songs is great.
Highlights: Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand) and You're all I Need to Get By.
Like most debut albums, Diana Ross’s self-titled solo debut isn’t anything close to astonishing artistically or sonically, but it’s a decent record that successfully manages to give us a peek at what Diana is capable of doing, and to me that’s the most important responsibility that a debut album has.
During the heyday of Mo-town of the late 60s to early 70s, Diana Ross wanted to prove that she was capable to be a rising star post in the acclaimed juggernaut "The Supremes". Her self-titled debut record proved that she was more than competent to give us a wholeheartedly & passionate performance. The album cover alone, shows Ross baring all and not wearing glamorous outfits as she once did with the trio.
