You Should Be Here is more than just a one-time catharsis -- it's a way forward for a fresh voice.

Complex

Aside from the strength of her voice, which bubbles at top range like Lil Mo’ and is suede-soft down below like Jojo, Kehlani’s imagination for storytelling is what sets You Should Be Here apart from its current R&B-pop corollaries.

AllMusic
While the singer and songwriter has fashioned herself into a contemporary R&B artist comparable to the likes of Jhené Aiko and Tinashe, she has retained the charming, down-to-earth qualities she displayed with her band.

HipHopDX

Kehlani’s debut album You Should Be Here is a fine start in the young performer putting together the pieces of a career that could possibly exceed that of the one-time Fugees member.

That Kehlani manages to breathe new life into these sounds and romantic musings is inspirational.

This album is so strong in its messages. The storytelling is beautiful and you can find here some great R&B bops. Kehlani's voice is so fresh here. Overall, it's a sincere and emotional record.

'You Should Be Here' is a very enjoyable listen, Kehlani's voice is perfect for the genre, and the record is focused and very confident, both in production and overall feel of each track.
However, I think a lot of the tracks are very similar, and I didn't find the lyrics on the album convincing at all.

Favorite moments: How That Taste, Be Alright.
