PRE-REVIRW NOTE: special is incoming. :p 💜
Jazmine Sullivan is a new name to me, and i was really surprised to see that she makes music since 2008, my original thoughts being that she might be another new R&B / neo-soul artist that started popping off recently.
In contrast with the overall background surprise, the project is definetly not offering much of a surprise to me. I like it, but not to an extent of listening to it that much.
The seemingly long EP features female empowerment ...

The harmonies and rhythms were too great for me to have anything bad to say about this album. Jazmine's voice is the sword cutting all the right edges, putting perspective into our minds. The interludes were setting the tone beautifully, I just love hearing women talking about reality. As far as the production, I still got nothing to complain, there's a little bit of R&B luxury for everyone.
After 6 years, I kind of wish there were more than 7 tracks, but the skits do help tell an interesting story. I appreciate how she told these tales from many different perspectives Jazmine's voice still sounds as powerful as ever and the features matched her tremendously. At the moment, I'm not sure if it's really on the level of her past records, but my opinion on that could change.

While nothing on here is super unique and the lyrics can sometimes be cringe, the melodies and her voice mixed with the production sound too good and are too catchy for me not to like this. There are some fantastic songs on here, and the features are pretty great too. There are a few too many skits, and the concept wasn't executed as well as it could have been, but overall this is a very enjoyable R&B record despite its flaws.

'Heaux Tales' may seem like just another drop of water in the ocean of R&B out there, but don't write this project off, because it features some of Jazmine Sullivan's most mature, self-loving and sensual songs yet, it feels like she's confident in herself and knows what she wants from a relationship after all the heartbreak she went through, and speaks about that on this project poetically and freely.
The 8 songs on here are complimented with different tales by women close to Jazmine ...

"Heaux Tales" attempts to cover some really intimate and serious topics, and while Jazmine's stunning vocal abilities shown here are perfect for that kind of project, the whole spirit fades away with unbelievably stupid and insensitive lyrics, that reoccur throughout the whole album.
this is not very Feminist™️ of me but the anderson paak feat is probably the best part of this album
"Heaux Tales is the most daring and cohesive project that Sullivan has released to date. It features eight songs that are connected by six spoken-word tracks narrated by several other women. Although it was released as an EP, it is complete as an album, working on themes such as sex, love, security, self-esteem, sadness, and relationship through sharp stories that look like popular folk legends. Its lyrics are direct and sure of themselves and their opinions, and its instrumentals are full ...

This is talk about how society holds men in high regards for having sex with a ton of women, and in low regard for women having sex with a ton of men. It's simply, men have to go out, train, fight, & hunt for theirs (one night stands, dating, sex, marriage; whatever they're looking for). The #1 thing most women are attracted to are a man's resources, for which he uses as bait, or something like a peacock uses his feathers. Resources can all ...

So I didn't know who Sullivan was, but I was anticipating this by seeing hype for it on twitter and knowing that there would be an Ari Lennox and .Paak feature. I've said it before- if R&B isn't great, then it's boring. Jazmine Sullivan is a great singer and super engaging- the problem is this album isn't. The fact that this album is almost more interlude than music takes you out immediately. The interludes are interesting for the ...

UPDATE 1: 60
I ignored the fact that this is an EP, being the case, it kinda substracts from the experience

This is good but bloated. If you look past the fact that half of these songs are skits, the actual songs are pretty good, but as it’s been said more eloquently by everyone else, the concept is more interesting than the music in most places. I think it’s easy to what-if with this one but it could have been so much better and powerful.

don’t have much to say about this project, but it was a nice and chill R&B EP that i could see myself returning to.

Jazmine Sullivan's 2021 extended play, Heaux Tales, is not a revolutionary body of work, and in my opinion, it does not have enough power to compete with hip hop and pop releases, those which dominate the mainstream now. However, it is quite strong compared to other contemporary R&B records, which often tend to sound uninteresting. Sonically, it does not leave the "comfort zone of R&B" but it sounds much more imaginative.
I would say it is a tough period for contemporary ...
read moreYou can see that the album is inspired by the character of SZA, but it is so good that it is up to par with SZA's brilliant debut.
I actually really enjoy the skits and the concept of it overall. However, I feel like there was so many hidden potential when it comes to tracks. Also the features were really good, but I would’ve liked to see a bit more variety
Honestly, it is honest but it's missing the poetry of words found in its "tales". The translation of words from tale seem lacking passed the opening "Pick Up Your Feelings" response. Perhaps I'm not the target audience but it never reaches any real heights for me.
