After hearing The National's lackluster debut record, I was honestly kinda nervous to see what else they could make. And I was definitely pleasantly surprised when I heard this. After hearing only their self-titled album, if you showed me Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers without telling me it was made by The National, I never would have guessed that it was them who made something like this. It's that time of the year for me.
Usually the more monotone vocals really bore me, but somehow Matt does it for me; in his very baritone delivery there's a semblance of depressive relatability I can't escape.
The instrumentals are not crazy creative or anything, but the songwritting and storytelling is captivating. Plus, the occasional emotional eruption in this particular album provides enough variety to maitain my attention throughout.
