People keep comparing this to Weezer when honestly it feels a lot more like POST-era Jeff Rosenstock mixed with Pavement if Stephen Malkmus was really fucking sad all the time. I've only chanced upon some of Billy Cobb's EPs from last year but none of them had songwriting or riffs as hard-hitting and standout as on the Bear Album.
Favorite tracks: It Takes Two to Tango, so What's That Guy Doing Here? , You'll Find Her Eventually, Zuzu's Pedals
Least Favorite: Lost Boys, Don't Bivouac Here
Billy Cobb picks up right where he left off last year (with his AMAZING string of EPs) and delivers a really solid little emo-inspired record.
He has quickly become one of my favorite artists to emerge out of the underground lately and I wish him all the success in the world!
This kid is special!
Though the Weezer influences are still very clear on Bear Album, it's the first LP from Billy I've heard that really sounds like his own, in contrast to the likes of the Zerwee duology.
Fav Tracks: Zuzu Pedals; Bobby Hipp; It Takes Two to Tango, so What's That Guy Doing Here?
Least Fav Track: You'll Find Her Eventually
Emo-tinged indie rock album. Not a huge fan of the sound. The drum machine hinders the emotional climaxes of the songs to hit as hard as they could. The songwriting is quite generic, the lyrics don't appeal to me either, sometimes bordering on corny.
This album has some of Billy's best songs but there are also three of some of the most boring tracks from Billy I've heard. I like the more downbeat approach of this album compared to some of Billy's other work. Overall there are a lot more positives about this album than negatives.
