I saw the critics ratings so I was curious, I’ve been getting into a bit of #2021 psychedelia this week.

I really struggle with this sort of attempted throwback non dynamic production though where the sounds are super insular. Even with bands I really love it inhibits me from fully enjoying some releases for example some King Gizzard releases. I was hoping this would stand out a lot more than it did. I think HLM are going for a cool thing, but it just doesn't land for me. The guitars don't pop enough in the mix and the afro-beat aspects feel like a side-effect and not the true soul of the band. When it comes to big chonky riff albums like this I definitely prefer my metal more thrashy or way more sludgy. The guitar tones just don't do it for me.
