CRITIC REVIEWS

Uncut

Scatterbrain is The Chills’ third album in six years and, like its immediate predecessors a worthy addition to a glorious canon.

Rarely straying into alien territory, the Dunedin quintet remains as restless and decorous as ever on Scatterbrain, proving that even the unsteadiest of minds can achieve greatness again and again.

AllMusic

It's dramatic, it's grand, and it proves yet again that Martin Phillipps hasn't lost a step and will hopefully go on for a long time making records as good as Scatterbrain.

70
PopMatters

Philosophical lyrics, earworms, and sonic creativity combine on the Chills' engaging new album Scatterbrain. Thoughts of our eventual end permeate the album.

70
The Young Folks

Scatterbrain is a testament to the group’s timelessness and ability to create works of art over several decades without ever losing touch of who they or going stale.

60
Mojo

Musically, this is through-and-through a Chills album, where Phillipps and his ever-mutable supporting players fuse moodiness with his instinctive feel for pop.

60
Classic Rock

Packed with soaring melodies that would soar far higher given more vocal muscle than Dunedin sound architect Martin Phillipps is prepared to employ, Scatterbrain makes Crowded House sound like Slayer.

The Sydney Morning Herald
His band’s second album since getting a second chance is both reflective and sobering.

A little tired and repetitive sounding; there are some nice moments here but they are just too few and far between and the vocals seem a bit over pronunciated and pretentious

Standouts: The Walls Beyond Abandon, Little Alien

Dropouts: Safe and Sound, Scatterbrain, Hourglass, Caught in My Eye
