VOLA’s clever combination of prog/djent and dreamy electronica with poppy hooks has always low-key done it for me. And this album definitely still shows they’ve got the charm and showcases plenty of interesting experimentation. But I do think I liked the direction that Applause of a Distant Crowd took with its focus on the otherworldly electronic atmosphere quite a bit more than the heavier leaning on more trite djent aesthetics of this LP.

After falling down a Danish rock rabbit hole with Iceage & Yung and feeling generally unsatisfied with Proggy releases this year I thought I’d give VOLA from Denmark a spin.
Although the musical intro’s to the songs on ‘Witness’ feel full of confidence and promise the opening couple of tracks from VOLA don’t hit me as I’d expect from such a positively rated album. ‘24 Light-Years’ offers an interesting point of difference and is a little more ... read more
(Danish artists really killing it this year! Whoo!)
VOLA's latest release is a dynamic and accessible progressive metal project which play things a bit safe but makes up for it in how naturally entertaining everything is!
VOLA is a Copenhagen progressive metal band that has been making quite a name for themselves in the past years for their tasteful blend of electronic components and metal instrumentation.

I have a pretty strong attachment to this record. It's been a record that I've always had since its release two years ago. For me, it's always a record I can put on and have a great time listening to. The record efficiently integrates synths and catchiness into a prog album making for an amazing, dreamy feel. This album has a few hiccups with Freak and Stone Leader Falling Down but those tracks are still really good. Overall, this album is one of my personal favorites.

My first intro to this band, the mix of entrancing atmospheric sounds along with a nu metal crunch makes this such an interesting listen. I can rarely follow what the lyrics are ever hinting at, but some nuggets shine through every now and then. Overall, it's just a cool vibe that sounds both pretty intense and pretty melodic at the same time. Napalm, Freak, and Inside Your Fur are great, but These Black Claws is in a class of its own.
