Free TC could use some editing, but Ty has enough charm to carry bedroom jams, Cadillac bangers, and folk-funk experiments all at once.
Free TC tops all expectations, as the man conquers the club, the bedroom, and the brain with this end-to-end stunner.
Ty delivers a light, layered debut, with more depth than we thought could be drawn out of the trap&B sound he helped usher into the mainstream.
You can credit both his fireside manner and his forthright delivery—there is no fine print in a Ty Dolla $ign song—for the fact that plenty of women will still slip into his silk sheet-covered waterbed despite his warnings.
All but two tracks feature guests and nearly every one has a different producer. These are ingredients for a directionless stew, but instead it adds up to a callback of the ambition of R. Kelly’s ‘90 albums.
With this album, Ty has proven that he’s not just another hook and single singer. He’s actually capable of creating a project that keeps listeners engaged for 16 tracks.
Ty Dolla $ign's forthcoming dominance throughout the R&B/hip-hop landscape is essentially cemented, as the Taylor Gang artist has adequately evolved beyond the confining barriers of strictly ratchet R&B.
Though a bit of a slog at points, what could have easily been a 16-track collection of Griffin's ambition becoming his downfall, is a worthwhile look at the multifaceted nature of his musical brain.
ty dolla $ign is one of my favorite artists of all time. my formal introduction to him was Free TC, and it remains as one of my favorite albums of all tome.
my favorite r&b album of the year, the hip hop elements are there, however ty dolla sign seems to sing a lot more, and he is very good at it too.
fav tracks: credit, guard down, when i see ya
my favourite rnb album of all time, ty effortlessly glide over these beats and the features sometimes outshines him (kendrick lamar, future comes to my mind), but he can mostly held his own on this album
