No Ripcord

The vocal hooks and catchy choruses that have brought Nada Surf this far have only gotten better, and for once, it sounds as if Caws has become content with the sound of his voice.

A.V. Club

It’s a disappointment that the band’s inspiration doesn’t extend further beyond its well-honed chords-and-choruses comfort zone.

Consequence of Sound

Stars finds the group reinvigorated with a collection of 10 tunes full of measured distortion, crisp hooks, and Caws’ earnest tenor.

The energy and exuberance of the album are a welcome change of pace, and longtime Nada Surf fans will not be disappointed.

Beats Per Minute

For those listeners who want something a bit more challenging and unpredictable, Nada Surf fail to demonstrate enough here in order to separate themselves from the crowd.

A catchy mid-tempo rocker can be good, but when there are 10 of them in a row the catchiness wears off and all that’s left is bland.

For all its adeptness of craft and attempts at revitalization, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy still feels like an album with precious little at stake.
