CRITIC REVIEWS

PopMatters

Essentially, it is a near perfect blend of blues and rock ‘n’ roll of times both past and present.

Paste

Fortunately for the Shakes ... their first true album Boys & Girls only justifies the fervor surrounding them.

The 405

For a debut album this is a stellar effort, and a piece of work that should be listened to as a whole, not just as a list of potential singles.

78
Pitchfork

Boys & Girls is a solid debut, really good but not earth-shifting, a record clearly (blessedly) recorded before anyone much cared who they were or weren't, possibly even before they were entirely sure themselves.

70
Consequence of Sound

Even if they are late to the party, Alabama Shakes have proven themselves as a band with a keen understanding of the genre’s basics and a curious spirit perpetually seeking to move upward and onward.

70
Beats Per Minute

Although the quartet works well together, it’s Howard who takes center stage on this debut.

70
NME

In many ways ‘Boys & Girls’ it is as note-perfect an album as you'll hear all year, yet it's also often perfectly inert.

67
A.V. Club

Exciting as it can be, Boys & Girls could use just a little more shakin’ going on.

musicOMH

Whether the hype will be justified remains to be seen, but there’s enough here to suggest that there is some substance to the attention currently focussed on Alabama Shakes.

50
Drowned in Sound

For the music fan (read: the cynic who hears a hundred new bands a week on the internet) this is an album to tire of before it’s even had the chance to permeate every pub you visit.

No Ripcord

For all the promise that is shown, every song is missing the element that might be able to take these songs into the stratosphere.

A soulful and bluesy record which is just oozing with southern charm. The vocals sound hoarse and drenched in whisky whilst the guitars have such a great bluesy bite.

Best Track: I Found You
Worst Track: You Ain't Alone

Mediocre at best
Fav Track: Hang Loose

Boys and girls, this is the South as we know it, raw and fascinating in its emotional intensity.
A solid and promising debut.

Good old Rock & Roll and Blues " But in a modern world that can be so hard to do " Alabama Shakes

American blues-rock band. This is their debut album. Name taken from their hometown. But who would have thought that the vocalist is actually a girl named Brittany. She sounds like a broken hearted guy who drink too much whiskey when she sings.
