Under The Radar

All Around Us is a worldly, global, and harmonious 43 minutes. Marela's fascination lies with sound manipulation and digital music creation tools, techniques (like vocal looping) she employs throughout the album to deepen her already full sound.

The Line of Best Fit

All Around Us can’t seem to feel anything other than transitional. Having evolved some semblance of a skeleton from her previous work, given its flashes of excellence, one can’t help but hope it ultimately morphs into a fully moving, breathing being next time out.

Sadly, all too often the material here is too gossamer-light to do anything but drift away, too insubstantial to merit closer scrutiny, due in large part to some rather clumsily cooing, cloying lyrics.

AllMusic
If there's a gripe to be had about the sum product, it's that it all starts to blend together and become less distinct rather than more so. However, the sound is so immersive that those who are taken with the glitch-foggy atmosphere will likely gleefully indulge.

Pitchfork
Marela’s lyrics sometimes lack craft and thoughtfulness, like words plucked from a diary and dropped into a song without regard to word choice or rhythm. It’s a fine line between childlike and childish, and too many songs tend toward the latter.

Consequence of Sound

All Around Us runs into the danger of stating things too plainly, of letting easy answers edge out space for complexity and depth. It feels like Marela wanted to make a weird album, but the one she’s made is mostly just pretty.
