They try to go more mainstream friendly.

Now remember at this time they didn't like there label because there forcing them to to this type of music.
All technicality, no soul.
Metropolis Pt. 2 better give me $15 million US, a car a blowjob and a decent cookie with all the schlock I've gone through with these early Dream Theater albums.

The big consensus of my opinion of Dream Theater (at lest their early work) is that while technically it's pretty good, it's pretty lackluster. This album had so much potential, but is a let down for me. The songs i don't like have some great instrumentation but as a whole its difficult to ignore the faults.
