Freddie Gibbs continues his recent style of singing which he has been experimenting with for a little bit now. I did quite enjoy gang sings as I thought his melodic hook was really nice and catchy. So hearing that this was going to be another track in which Freddie Gibbs continues his singing, I had high hopes. However, this track doesn't live up to the standards of gang signs.

The production is decent. It's very mellow and has a nice (what I think is a) flute in the instrumental as well as ... read more
I could get behind a more melodic Freddie Gibbs project...

Is his singing fantastic? No, of course not. Of course his singing isn’t great. But it’s not terrible at all, and he’s able to bring a lot of emotion to the track with his performance. The instrumental is pretty good as well. Is it my favorite Freddie Gibbs single? No. But I don’t think it’s boring at all.
Freddie Gibbs covering Gil Scott-Heron is something I never could have predicted, but this actually sounds pretty damn good!
The singing isn't great, we all know that. But, intentionally or not, it makes the Gibbs' performance more emotive and unique which is what a song and subject matter like this needed! Plus that instrumental is beautiful.

I'm down if he wants to move in a more Blues/Soul direction, because he has a talent for it!
Freddie Gibbs doing a cover of the late Gil Scott-Heron's 'Winter in America' is a concept that looks like a yikes on paper, but in execution it's surprisingly great, he may not be a great singer but he certainly conveys the emotion that accompany the lyrics, add some very spacious production with jazzy undertones and we got a good balance. Given his previous single and by what some others were saying I was pretty apprehensive about this track but I really liked it surprisingly.
