With the seamless blend of psychedelia, soul, and jazz, Hiatus Kaiyote hopes to be the vanguard of what is to come for the genre.

Despite its radiance, neo-soul is a genre at its crossroads. Despite its past excellence, from Tony! Toni! Toné! to Jill Scott, neo-soul desperately needs a strong shot in the arm. Derived from the demand ... read more

I have yet to hear a Hiatus Kaiyote album before, so once their first album in six years was released I came into it with no expectation. Now that I’ve finished listening, I have to say that there is a lot to love about “Mood Valiant”.

I ran into an unusual instance for this record - when I typically listen to albums I really enjoy (or hate) for the first time I immediately start having thoughts about what I would say if I was talking about the project to a friend. But this ... read more

Neo-soul futurists return with songs that feel more like…. songs compared to their previous albums. Packing at just around 43 minutes, the songs are diverse but not enough to make you to stop listening. For example, ‘Rose Water’ is an overall chill listen but there are some Brazilian influences. However, I do feel like the mixing on songs like chivalry and Get Sun could be better. I also don’t really like how the album ends; it’s kinda abrupt, and the flow is a ... read more

'Mood Valiant' is approachable but not totally reachable. In a sense the tracks have a unity vibe, but something about the way the beats flow, some of the record feels sort of derranged but not in an entirely bad way. This is a band that knows exactly their style, the vocalist is quite great very old school sort of jazz singer, the instrumentals can be very floral always ascending to compart at some time, the cover is stunning, everything feels nice.

This album came out exactly like I wanted it to! Nai Palm shredding the vocals over funky & dreamy production. This was worth the 6 year wait.

Favorite tracks: Chivalry Is Not Dead, And We Go Gentle, Get Sun, Rose Water, Red Room, Sparkle Tape Break Up, Stone or Lavender

Six years is a long time in the music world these days, and by now it feels like an eternity since the release of the genre-bending sophomore album Choose Your Weapon from Hiatus Kaiyote. This is especially true given how much the star seemed to be rising for the Australian act; having been sampled by an ever-increasing spectrum of commercial talents, from Anderson .Paak to Kendrick to Drake and all the way to the titan duo of Beyonce and Jay-Z, their eclectic form of alternative R&B and ... read more

Australian neo-soul band Hiatus Kaiyote made a big impression on me upon hearing their stellar sophomore effort Choose Your Weapon. What really stood out for me was how bold their sound was, with its vibrant grooves and killer vocals from Nia Palm. To me, the album just dripped with originality. Now after a 6 year gap, the band returns with album three Mood Valiant, a release that delivers on the great anticipation with an equally excellent listen. The intro into another one is a little ... read more

the best record to start this day

We might be spectators of the next stage for neo-soul with Hiatus Kaiyote becoming possible pioneers. Thirsty for complexity and ambitious at its core, Mood Valiant's atmosphere is a clash of nature at its wildest. The album lures you into its world and invites you to explore it, where you'll soon find out that it is unapologetically mosaic. These labyrinthine takes on production bite back on Mood Valiant, where mixing becomes disruptive and structure begs for ... read more

I really want to like the overall sound on here, but much of this record just comes across as a one-note gimmick. The gimmick does allow the album to reach some great highs, but the songwriting leaves a lot to be desired and the instrumental performances are pretty inconsistent. Even if this does take a more angular and experimental approach to jazz-soul, I'd just rather listen to Lianne La Havas.

After an over 5 year hiatus, Hiatus Kaiyote delivers another fun albeit overrated record just like their 2015 'Choose Your Weapon'.

A neo-soul funk dream that melts into your soul. Nai Palm has such a stellar voice, it reminded me of how identical her and JoJo sound. Production is slick, funky, and PRETTY (Stone or Lavender is fucking gorgeous). I need more!!!

‘Mood Valiant’ is an abstract neo-soul project filled with sporadic, eclectic production and soulful performances. The smooth vocal mixing and varied instrumentals make for a consistently engaging listen, even if its repetitive structure can feel bloated on tracks like “Stone Or Lavender.” Despite its many unique qualities, it’s never too unorthodox, causing its lack of overarching themes to dull out certain areas of the track list. However, it still does more than ... read more

“Mood Valiant” gives an odd production and instrumental style for R&B with the production lacking space and the instruments chosen. The odd production is best shown on “Chivalry is Dead”. The synths and fast flow makes it more noticeable. “Chivalry is Dead” was a great moment on the project but I was pretty indifferent with most of the project. There were just songs where I feel like more should have been added. The instruments that were ... read more

Goodness, this is an aesthetically pleasing album. And even then I still think "Choose Your Weapon" might be even more aesthetically pleasing. But I'm not here to compare the two. "Mood Valiant" is a new album from the Australian Neo-soul group Hiatus Kaiyote. On this album, they showcase the sheer intricacy of their beautiful yet somewhat somber instrumentation and production. And on top of that, the lead singer brings in their unique vocal style to add texture and beauty ... read more

Really needed to hear Stone or Lavender during this time in my life. Nai Palm's vocals are out of this world and the instrumental work on this record is cosmic, groovy, and even trippy at times. Brainfeeder putting out some of my favorite music in the last decade. This one doesn't disappoint.
