The Line of Best Fit

Ever soothing and uplifting, the 11 tracks represent the sonic equivalent of a soft blanket - slightly used and tainted by a few patches, but comforting none-the-less.

80
Dork

An album that’s definitively Rex Orange County, but welcoming enough to be for everyone, ‘Who Cares?’ is personal but oh so relatable. More than enough to ensure continued devotion remains.

80
Evening Standard

The sound is more uniform and coherent than O’Connor’s earlier work.

80
NME
On this joyous and uplifting fourth outing, the Hampshire-born singer-songwriter takes a walk on the bright side.
80
AllMusic

Who Cares? is a perfect amalgam of O'Connor's throwback instincts, marked by sun-dappled melodies, orchestral sections, woody bass grooves, and a cloudy-day sadness that feels decidedly post-millennial.

Northern Transmissions

If you only came for Tyler the Creator, it’s likely you’ll stay for the rest of this catchy and talented album, made to soundtrack your own personal falling and rising, the troubles of true love and self-acceptance.

70
DIY

The record’s release in the genesis of a twee renaissance is near-perfect timing. ‘WHO CARES?’ delicately posits escapism as a human need, not a choice.

70
Clash

There is something for everyone to relate to or take away from ‘Who Cares?’ and it helps that it’s not too bad on the ears either.

70
The Needle Drop

An improvement over Pony on all fronts.

60
Gigwise

WHO CARES? can ... feel a little over-produced and lacks the rawness of Apricot Princess or Pony.

60
The Irish Times
Collaborations with American rappers such as Chance the Rapper and Tyler, the Creator might add an extra creative frisson to the music, but if you drill down deep enough, it is ROC’s dexterous touches to pop music – all present and correct here – that are the most endearing.
60
The Independent
New album finds Alex O’Connor continuing to embrace jollier beats while owning his ambivalence.
60
The Observer
The Surrey singer-songwriter’s fourth album offers plenty of hooks but lacks the depth to be truly memorable.
60
The Young Folks

Despite the cramped production and overuse of mirroring rhythmic patterns, Who Cares? demonstrates the blueprint for potential success, but inevitably falters by playing it far too safe.

60
The Telegraph
He is beating his own idiosyncratic path and catching the ear of an audience charmed by his touchy-feely candour about his personal wellbeing. Yet who would have imagined profound struggles with mental and emotional health could sound this bland?
60
Spectrum Culture

Though the album may lose some of its effectiveness midway through, Rex Orange County manages to strike a near-perfect balance of a winning formula and a mix of variety on the first half of Who Cares?.

40
The Guardian

Alex O’Connor has a knack for melody, but his unrelenting self-absorption leaves the resulting songs feeling flat and thin.

WHO CARES? might not be a stylistic advancement for Rex Orange County, but the sunlight shines on him throughout the entire project, creating a cheerful experience to say the least.

Alexander James O’Connor, better known as “Rex Orange County” caught my attention about a month ago when I decided to give the leadup single “KEEP IT UP” a spin. I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected for such a safe track. This track motivated me to try out his other work. That was ... read more

« We find all the ingredients which play to his strengths as a singular artist and his ability to build catchy songs around contagious melodies. Once again, Rex Orange County delivers a lasting sense of warmth through a naïve but seductive romanticism »

That's the most Rex Orange County-ish album that Rex Orange County has ever released. I mean, he sings with passion, it's danceable, the music has cool vibes and it suits every single situation, and after all it's a relatable record. I like it when artists make us feel connected to their music somehow. I wouldn't say the production is kinda one note, but I'd like to see more of it, and besides this little complain I don't have much more to criticize. It's great, I had fun with 'WHO ... read more

This sounds like the cover art. Really good singing and strong production that builds a very strong vibe. The first half is really good, but it kind of falls off in the second half. Still consistently great sound.
