Energy, experimentation, ambition, and a little bit of elegance.

When listening to the work of a band as eclectic in influence as black midi, any expectations you may have are to be thrown out the window. For anyone who thought there was a possibility of pinpointing where the band would move next, they’ll sorely be proven wrong as ‘Cavalcade’ manages to subvert your expectations in completely different ways than any other way the band has achieved yet. Those seeking the ... read more

bm's last album was great, but this album just does something else to me. I am in love with the chaotic freeform style this album just nails. I have a video reaction coming soon, but I will just say that this is the most satisfying shit I could ask for

Oh.

My.

Fucking.

God: Part Two!

I don’t even think you need to read this review. If you know me and my taste, you know for a good damn FACT that this album was gonna be my thing. There’s no amount of paragraph’s I need to write in order to get that across. From the genres alone of noise rock, math rock and experimental rock, you could almost pinpoint my high score for Local Weirdos Black Midi. But in a strange turn of events, not only did Black Midi expand on their sound ... read more

9.6 - Must Listen

“All I gotta say is... black midi, I wish you luck.” (reedy, Bright Green Field review, May 7, 2021.)

Well they got good luck.

Cavalcade is an album I have been highly anticipating this year, especially over the past 2 months. In March, I listened to Schlangenheim for the first time, and I was immediately floored by it’s energetic nature and unique, hard hitting style. However, I listened to this the same day as John L came out, and man what a track. ... read more

As some of you might remember, a few months back I posted a review of black midi's last project, Schlagenheim (https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/halbery/album/153878-schlagenheim/), which detailed some tales of the many German teachers of my educational career. It wasn't a hugely popular review, but I had a good time writing it, so I'd like to do something similar for this review. Today I'm going to talk about my beloved middle school health class teacher, Mr. E.

Mr. E was a very tall, thin ... read more

To me this is just a complete and chaotic mess, but as it is not conventional, let's give it 90 and say it is the best thing ever made.

Yes, have some interesting moments, but I would like to know why they say they are so good, then I would listen with different eyes, but at that moment it is just a lot of noise without any sense to me.

Everybody seems that are playing a completely different song, and I don't like all this informations coming by different sides.

What was supposed to be ... read more

on cavalcade, black midi combine elements of jazz, prog, noise, and art rock to make a beautiful and exciting mess (in the most endearing way possible). this entire album is great. from the energetic and unpredictable opener, john L, to the beautiful closer of ascending forth.between the golden tickets, my love for the singles, my enjoyment of their debut, and all of the praise the leaks were receiving, i convinced myself that preordering the vinyl would be worth it. now, i’ve never ... read more

I can’t stop sucking the windmill scene’s dick, apparently. I'm sorry! I just can't help myself! ; )

(Most of) black midi is back with a PURRRPOSSE. The guitar-toting frontflip extraordinaire Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin is taking a break for a little bit to focus on his mental health, but the band is pretty much their chaotic selves. Everything they've presented on 2019's amazing "Schlagenheim" is accounted for on "Cavalcade". Their complex math rock tendencies ... read more

Oh my look how fast they can play their instruments 👀 lol

after some time I like John 50 quiet a bit more than the rest. I enjoy it in general, but that song is the clear winner for me.

how to *highlight* the word BUSSY from the chat

This year has seen an explosion of post rock albums, specifically from the Windmill scene in England, but while for the most part they’ve all been solid the only one I truly loved was Black Country, New Road’s debut album, and considering I didn’t really connect with “Schlagenheim” I wasn’t really expecting much from the newest release from black midi. However, now that it’s finally here, I can safely say ... read more

ALBUM OF THE MONTH: May 2021

★★★★★★★★☆☆
8.3/10

While "Cavalcade" isn't by any means a perfect album, the boldness, and musical and conceptual confidence presented here by black midi reach over the moon, and could certainly be compared to those of the all-time greats like King Crimson or David Bowie.

This album offers probably the most tastefully balanced, sophisticated, and diversified sound we heard this year so far. There's this feeling of absolute control ... read more

Don't miscondunct the whole destruction, 'Cavalcade' is an abstract form of self awareness. Black Midi is a band that have been known for just a minute and it's already a phenomenon, bringing the post rock to new form and new hights, the music they made is ready to blast your ears in pure ilumination and full delusion.

'John L' brings to the table the most insane production I've heard in a while (maybe my whole life), the post rock instrumentation serves as a background to this jazz infused ... read more

Like their predecessor, I just can't relate to this in any way, shape or form. Too artsy fartsy and inaccessible. We get it, you went to a posh school and are trying so hard to be King Crimson.

I’m a dumb idiot who was initially wrong about this album...it has grown on me with every listen. Also I can’t stop playing John L and Slow please help.

At first I thought that Cavalcade was just an album that I appreciated more than I necessarily connected with and loved, but wow was I wrong. The more I listen to this the more I start to love it.

I had seen a lot of praise for Black Midi, but this was my first time actually listening to anything from them. I saw the absolutely ... read more

It seems that the wave of post punk albums are here to stay in 2021 from the brilliant For the first time to the interesting Bright Green Field and now it's Cavalcade's turn. The main point of this album is definitely the experimental production, it's so chaotic that it is both elegant and irritating at the same time.

On one hand I am surprised by the technique and quality of production but on the other hand I cannot stay completely connected by the project, at least in the same way that I ... read more

WELCOME TO HELL

I mean I already knew I was gonna fall head over heels for this thing but come on. Come ON. How do they do it. The boys from Bristol did it yet again. Praise Greep.

Yeah, like what am I even supposed to say about this. It's Black Midi doing even more with their insane prog-math-experimental-noise-jazz-what the fuck-rock than I ever thought they could do. Whereas Schlagenheim sounded like someone doing cocaine ... read more

There are few bands that have changed the way I look at rock music over the past few years. Black midi is one of them. My epic discovery of this band just came from a single, and a semi-curious vinyl buy the Friday Schlagenheim dropped. Ever since I've been obsessed. If you’ve followed this account for a while you’d know that I love these guys, and every band surrounding them very much. Coming out of Schlagenheim I didn’t know what to expect, was I in for more of the same or ... read more

Why.
Why do you guys like this so much?

It's very often the case where you can learn a lot about an album because of it's album cover. Maybe the cover is why I decided to wait 2 days before checking out this album. Now let's take a gander at the cover in question. Erm...
