The Virginia crooner reintroduces himself with a set of sumptuous, retro R&B that’s a soothing, dapper fit for his impressive vocal range.

He’s tasteful enough to let his voice add most of the humor and warmth to what’s in most other aspects a smart, grown-up modern soul album.

Whether it’s the tamed language, misused guest features, or the comparatively flaccid production choices, Shelley FKA DRAM plays it a bit too safe for those hoping for a good ole mix of the artist’s cheesiness and sleaziness.

Five long years after the release of his smashing debut, the artist you probably know as DRAM, now using his birth name Shelley, has finally dropped his sophomore project. However, while the album is certainly an enjoyable listen, “Shelley FKA DRAM” isn’t exactly what fans have probably been waiting for.

Over the course of forty minutes, Shelley croons over a collection of ten R&B tracks that are nothing short of sensual. His voice is angelic, warm, smooth, and full of ... read more
It's been a while since I heard from Shelley FKA DRAM, ever since the release of his debut album and got a hit with "Broccoli" when he still was DRAM, and this album is a pretty solid return for Shelley. This is a very smooth soul album with DRAM's vocals being as good as always and the production being very clean and concise. This new self-titled LP displays the next step in the artistic evolution of Shelley as he delivers a poignant project full of mature sensuality.

That's the big change between Shelley's two studio albums. It's up ... read more
I didn't even know this came out, and I was even looking forward to it, given the name change implied a more serious and less carefree direction. i wanted to love this record but unfortunately it was a very disappointing listen. i think the main problem with it is inconsistency because there are some really incredible songs in here but the album is also packed with so so moments. there isn't a song that i think it's bad but there were a lot of tracks where i felt like instrumentally and melodically there wasn't much going on and just ended up being boring. the one with erykah badu for example was one that i was very excited to hear but ... read more
