The Forty-Five
If Cake Pop only wanted to push the envelope just that little bit further to find new, uncharted territory in an increasingly rigid hyperpop universe – and to have fun doing it – then ‘Cake Pop 2’ truly is a thing of great, rowdy, ridiculous beauty.

Dylan Brady’s experimental pop troupe finds idiosyncratic takes on late-aughts pop, but gets bogged down by great gecspectations and its leader’s own overwhelming influence.

not gonna make a joke before this review

this album opens up with two really processed and clunky songs that are both extremely busy and cluttered. hate to say it, but this is the final nail in the coffin for hyperpop, at least for me. the rebecca black remix had me really worried and there has not been a single good thing to come out of this genre for so long. every single song on here sounds like an obnoxious throwaway from 100 gecs. however, instead of reminding me of songs like money ... read more

while i don’t understand why everyone is saying that this is the death of hyperpop, i definitely do not like this album. it is definitely pretty fun at times, but it can also be repetitive and obnoxious. it just feels like it’s not really going anywhere. it’s not terrible, dylan’s production is pretty good but as a whole this album isn’t good.
