AllMusic

Whether or not they decide to revive their ongoing album mythology, Scaled and Icy will remain a quick dose of TOP perfection, a lean catalog gem that is bright, effervescent, and immensely addictive.

80
The Arts Desk

Some of the most awesomely direct and ebullient music Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun have yet created.

80
NME

Sure, there is some inevitable fan service ... but this album sees one of the most fearless bands of their generation continue to take risks.

70
Clash
With the number of times most – though not all - of these tracks having you reaching for the replay button, memorable is definitely the word to describe the album.

The Line of Best Fit

No matter your view, Scaled And Icy is Twenty One Pilot’s at their most fun, and while it’s not a home run, as a society it’s a time for exploration and change, and the duo have pasted the pastel colours on heavy ready for when the sunshine decides to grace us with its presence.

60
The Guardian
For the uninitiated, it will seem a pleasingly buoyant, if conspicuously USP-less, soundtrack to a more universal anticipation of light at the end of a very long tunnel.

Kerrang!

Scaled And Icy is a good record which balances out the occasional underwhelming moment with flashes of brilliance that could only come from its creators.

60
Evening Standard
The band’s latest album sees them embracing a sunnier sound - but is it worth sticking around to decipher all their secret messages?
50
Gigwise
An unfocused, often forgettable, attempt to appeal to the masses with cutesy pop tunes.
50
Rolling Stone
The hugely successful Ohio “rock” duo keep creating smooth genre-eliding sounds to soften anxious moods — like a Maroon 5 with some vulnerability beneath the pop sheen.
40
No Ripcord
Behind the sunny disposition, Joseph's intent to go from heart-tugging ballads to vacuous ear candy makes this whole experience sound a little tone-deaf by design. And really, no amount of myth-busting will uncover some profound truth when the music itself sounds so limiting and faceless.

Spectrum Culture

Scaled and Icy can’t decide who it wants to appeal to, so the result is a disappointing and watered-down installment in the Twenty One Pilots’ canon.

Some hits, some misses. Cool concept, weak execution.

Starts strong, and ends VERY strong, but I will forget about everything inbetween

To say that Twenty One Pilots is a band with chameleonic tendencies would be quite the understatement. They are far more than that, a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to music- Pop Rap, Alternative Rock, Top 40s, Indie Pop, Spoken-Word, you name it, there’s a probable chance they’ve done it. Though, if their music proves anything, it’s that no matter how many styles of music you cover, it doesn’t always ensure you will stick the landing. The band's chronic failure, at ... read more
