The Line of Best Fit
Souls may be sold separately on the trail for gold, but respect is earned, and Freddie Gibbs continues to rack up the points with another stellar entry in an almost-infallible collection of projects.

HipHopDX

Rap nerds will forever debate which collaboration with Madlib — Piñata or Bandana — is the real classic, or if Alfredo, his Grammy-nominated album with The Alchemist, is his final form. $oul $old $eparately is neither, but it’s quite good, and a good Freddie Gibbs album is an already high standard to match.

Clash

Peppering the underground with some of its most influential cuts, each new project has taken him closer to his goals – hell, he’s even nailed a Grammy nomination. ‘$oul $old $eperately’ works emphatically to bring these elements together and push them to a new level.

The Telegraph

Technically Gibbs is a flawless emcee and it’s great to see more of his melodic range on SSS, something that will deservedly bring in new fans.

The Needle Drop
The best album from Freddie in the director's seat.

Pitchfork
Inviting producers like Kaytranda, James Blake, and DJ Paul into the fold offers a refreshing canvas for a rapper whose technical prowess and stark songwriting deserve a varied landscape to thrive in.

AllMusic

Grander in scope than Gibbs' rightly praised single-producer efforts, $oul $old $eparately is nearly as consistent, as the project is driven by his unyielding focus.

Slant Magazine
Even with all of its expensive-sounding beats and guest spots, the album is a frustratingly unambitious effort.

Gibbs doesn’t sacrifice his sound for a more personal album experience. It’s incredibly consistent and engaging. Also that guy on Grandma’s Stove sounds so much like Frank Ocean, I thought I was having a fever dream

Thanks to the homies @DonCorleone and @Z.Younk for mitigating my expectations. If i went into this record blind, i think i’d be pretty disappointed. I’d probably expect a hardcore Gibbs album, or the soulful gangsta style that we got from his Madlib collaborations. Needless to say this is completely different, it’s his excursion into the mainstream. For what it is, it actually isn’t bad. Sure Freddie's performances aren't always the best, sometimes he stumbles over his ... read more

Freddie Gibbs on modern beats is so weird since he's made a legacy working with the Alchemist and Madlib

It has some high highs, but I can't avoid the lows.
