The Griselda rapper’s second album of 2021 is his statement of reinvention, a neat balance between glitz and grime.
Utilising a diverse, multi-talented cast, it’s a broad return, whose energy is coupled with a lack of focus, meaning that it feels more like a stepping stone than a destination point.
For the most part, Conway sticks to his signature cadence throughout this tight, 40-minute rip. So, those rare excursions where he stretches outside his vocal comfort range are much welcome.
The Needle Drop

Apart from a sort of shaky first leg, La maquina is another solid release from Conway this year.

A couple have months have passed, so obviously that means a new Griselda project is being released. I admire that each member is able to churn out projects on a regular basis to keep listeners fed, including Conway the Machine who managed five projects in about a year. That said, I can’t help but feel like Griselda as a whole, including Conway, is starting to experience the issue of “quantity over quality”, and this persists on “La Maquina”.

Edit: This has grown on me a little. 75 to 80

While at times this is trendier and not as consistent as some of the best projects from Griselda, La Maquina still has some great highlights, production, and performances from Conway and the features he brings on.

I’ll always be interested in new Conway music, but I was a little worried about how much music he has been dropping lately. Griselda typically prefers quantity over quality, and while Westside Gunn has been the epitome of this, ... read more
You'd think I'd get tired of praising the Griselda crew with the sheer volume of projects they seem to produce in lightning-quick procession, but it just never seems to get old. With an incredible amount of releases in 2020 from each member of the crew - Benny the Butcher, Westside Gunn, and Conway the Machine - the crew were on top of the hip hop world throughout the year. With only Conway the Machine releasing a new full project thus far in 2021, as Benny the Butcher has only released an EP ... read more
la maquina is an incredibly enjoyable hardcore hip hop album with insanely good production. seriously, the production on this is epic. not to say conway himself isn’t good. his lyrics are usually good and his flow is pretty good. however, the production absolutely steals the show. i think every track is well produced. however, there are some tracks i don’t like and this is either thanks to conway or an unnecessary feature. had to hustle has an awkward hook that feels out of place ... read more
If you're a huge fan of Conway and Griselda in general then 'La Maquina' will do a lot for you, as for me I think that the album is decent but all in all Conway has made better records.

'La Maquina' in many respects is similar to his 2020 record 'From King to A GOD' which up to this point has been my favourite record from Conway and as of late it has become my favourite Griselda project overall, I say that it's similar because a lot of what Conway was doing on that album turns up on here, ... read more
