Dork
While it isn’t likely to convert people who didn’t like the debut, it’s a perfectly distilled example of what she does best.

Northern Transmissions
It’s an interesting look at the work she has been doing behind the scenes as she preps her sophomore record but it is also a really accomplished collection of songs.
80
The Arts Desk
It’s a fine collection of songs which finds Jorja in a more world-weary and sombre head space than ever before.

Clash
A project of persona evolution, ‘Be Right Back’ finds Jorja Smith in motion – she’s opening out her sound, and finessing her approach. The results are immaculate – and she’s only just getting started.

Paste

On her latest project, Be Right Back, Smith continues to show creative growth while simultaneously leaning into vulnerability more than ever.

Pitchfork
With stripped-back instrumentation and poignant emotion, the English singer’s latest release is a stopgap EP that punches above its weight.
70
Loud and Quiet
Outside of the immediately catchy arrangements, with soulful jazz inflections and subtle reggae fusions, Jorja Smith’s shining personality is the core strength of this thoroughly enjoyable record.
70
The Forty-Five
The British artist tides us over between her first and second album with a set of vignettes that reaffirm her emotional power.
70
DIY
It’s in the first half, shorn of any jazzy accompaniment, that ‘Be Right Back’ is truly interesting.

AllMusic
These songs stand on their own and bode well for the second album.

NME
Experimenting with different vocal registers and taking advantage of how harmoniously her voice goes with live instruments, she’s shared a collection that should leave you itching for her next step. If these are loosies, it’s proof of how top-notch her craft is.

The Observer

This eight-track halfway house between Lost & Found and Smith’s next full album covers familiar ground.

Be Right Back has some enjoyable songs and I like a lot of what’s on here, but many times it doesn’t feel fully realized and feels like a collection of nice sounding throwaways, which ultimately makes it kinda boring.

I really liked Jorja Smith’s debut album and I thought it was one of the best albums of 2018. I was hoping this would be on that level, but the solid but underwhelming singles didn’t fill me with much hope. And while I do think this is an enjoyable EP, it ... read more

This EP starts sounding more dull and more unfinished with every play. It feels like the scrapped version of Jorja's second album, rather than something to tide us over to it.

Be Right Back it's a lovely project with sweet vocals and a simplistic instrumentation, but quite inconsistent. I didn't have many expectations for this EP, as they are saved for the second album (since the great Lost & Found) but I wasn't disappointed (neither satisfied). Some songs will be on replay like "Addicted", "Gone" and "Burn" but the other ones are quite forgettable and just decent for me. Honestly, I don't have very strong feelings towards this EP, ... read more

I thought I would really hate this but I end up liking it. 'Be Right Back' is the most chill Jorja has ever been, slick production & an atmosphere of lust and calm ambient.
