Indeed, it's difficult to listen to too much of Bittersweet Demons without imagining the group flouncing about on a re-run of Top Of The Pops or The Old Grey Whistle Test, but the crackling energy and embarrassment of melodic riches bursting from each song here makes for a persistently joyous listen.

Featuring two members of King Gizzard & TLW, Melbourne’s Murlocs deal in piano-born yacht-pop melodies allied to harmonica-blessed, garage-psych production values and Lennon-esque charm.

AllMusic

Bittersweet Demons feels like the group's first album that isn't just a lark made during downtime stolen from other bands. Now the Murlocs come across like a real band looking to make something meaningful, both to them and to the listener, and in that regard, the album is a total success.

Personally, I think Bittersweet Demons is The Murlocs' best work. The vocals are incredible. Some of the bass & harmonica is blissful, but it's the consistency of the storytelling and lyricism that is very impressive (which sets it apart). It comes across as a very personal album for Ambrose Kenny-Smith.
