Despite its slightness, Broken Hearts and Beauty Sleep nonetheless shows Mykki Blanco as an artist with big ideas to go along with their big personality.

The Forty-Five

Should you require a manual to remember how to navigate emotions post-lockdown, ‘Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep’ is a pretty good bet.

DIY

A glorious trip through all facets of Mykki’s musical personality.

80
NME

A bold and brilliant step forward.

The Sydney Morning Herald

While most of the album is a mellifluous experiment in R&B, what ultimately makes it worthy of being played on repeat are the flourishes of irreverence and poetry that make Mykki unlike any other performer.

70
Loud and Quiet

Rooted in rap, the record unfurls over nine tracks to incorporate slow jams, dance music, spoken word and much more.

The Observer

The New York artist-cum-rapper amps up the emotion on their latest outing, along with some nods to jazz and house.

The Arts Desk

With Broken Hearts and Beauty Sleep, Mykki Blanco consolidates, adding a seasoning more pop and depth-of-production to her formula, but retaining what fans enjoyed in the first place.

Crack Magazine

Where 2016’s Mykki was a refined take on their earlier rap projects, Broken Hearts is a confident melange of genres, styles, and collaborations that pushes Blanco into places we’ve never even imagined them going.

All is forgiven by the time Big Freedia appears on closing track ‘That’s Folks’, though. Spooky stabs of piano form the spine of a bouncing instrumental, with Blanco and Freedia taking turns to shout out their titular ‘folks’ with all the energy of a Southern rap classic.

Mykki Blanco has, from the beginning, been synonymous with fun, but Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep takes this to another level

Another notable change, is that it's ... read more

Mykki Blanco has tons of personality to go around and it really comes out on her wildly expressive second album Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep. Listening through this album, it really sounds like Mykki is having a fun time creating music that is a bit out there with its genre blurring style, but every bit of it screams originality. Aided by production from FaltyDL and an assortment of featured guest including Blood Orange, Jamila Woods & Big Freedia, Mykki gives us an insight into her ... read more

I'm so mixed. Summer Fling was awesome, but Want From Me is the prime example for how most of the songs go. I am angry at that song. So good in the first half, but the second half is so repetitive it ruins it.
