CRITIC REVIEWS

90
No Ripcord

Don’t mistake Newcombe’s good behaviour for playing it safe though, as Aufheben teases these mellow, Krautrock tunes between scores of exotic string-arrangements and left-field instrumentals.

80
NME
Mainman Anton Newcombe is now sober, and here has made his best album since 2003's '…And This Is Our Music'.
80
AllMusic

Aufheben's shining moments are the most daring ones, and are also surprisingly sweet.

80
Sputnikmusic
Much like the Socialist commune they share a part of their name with, BJM retains the mysterious cult image that attracts a few but repels many.
70
Consequence of Sound

Arcing back to the band’s debut Methodrone, Aufheben is a far more relaxed and hypnotic trip, with the shoegaze exchanged for a transcendent haze.

70
Drowned in Sound

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, this sounds like an album by The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

musicOMH

Aufheben may not be vintage BJM but it's still pretty groovy stuff.

70
Under The Radar

With Aufheben, it seems as if Brian Jonestown Massacre is getting better again. And it's nice to hear.

70
The Fly
A comforting return to the hazy psychedelia and laconic 1960s bohemia of prime BJM, only now with added eastern twinges.
63
Pitchfork

Aufheben is the band's most consistent, welcoming, and sonically lustrous album in years

60
PopMatters
Meaning falls by the wayside in favor of mood and atmosphere, ethereal and dreamlike as the album sounds like the soundtrack to a Zazen mediation session or some New Age trip-out.
