AllMusic
Confidence bursts throughout, and for a band that has been around seven years and has never released a studio full-length album until now, achieving nearly epic-like status is quite impressive.

Hopes and Fears contains more hooks than most pop groups manage in their careers.

Keane rely too heavily on Chaplin's show-stopping vocals, and the radio-friendly simplicity of the lyrics grates.

Despite some fine moments, on the whole there's not enough that's memorable or above average. No one would give Keane a second glance if Tom Chaplin did not possess such a gift of a voice.

Sometimes a CD comes along by a band unknown that catches me totally by surprise. Keane's "Hopes and Fears" is one such example. Catchy, moody pop tunes that suffice to soothe my soul and appeal to my own state of being. No apology here. I simply really like this album.

Comparison is something that many times ruin things, this album is in many ways unique, when you compare them to other similar bands it's not fair, because you have to fully understand individuals of this band and the different mood that they have. Their approach to this genre is pretty different from others, Chaplin voice is unique too, as a debut they've done it and they've done it fantastic.

I only decided to listen to this because of the first track and I am pleasantly surprised. Hopes and Fears certainly isn't very ambitious, but what it is is a collection of solid piano rock songs with some interesting writing and great melodies.
