PopMatters
It’s an album where grand ambitions and warm sounds meet at an opportune intersection where texture ultimately overrules genre.

'Terrain' gives us a band at the peak of its powers, confident in its ability, willing to take risks but always delivering. This may be Portico Quartet’s finest album yet.

Mojo

Retaining the spooky cinematics that are Portico's stock-in-trade, Terrain's meld of Midori Takada and Sun Ra teases and tricks its way to mantric embrace.

Loud and Quiet

To their credit, on Terrain Portico Quartet manage to steer just clear of such Fast Show ‘nice’-ness by taking painstaking care with every part of the record, meaning that if at first it might seem a little too polite for some, close, repeated listens will be richly rewarded.

Uncut
The “terrain” explored is both external and internal, tranquil and troubling.

A slightly less riveting and slightly more despondent album from the London jazz band. Terrain's sound cascades slowly and unfortunately therefore at some points tediously. Though when it kicks into gear, it doesn't disappoint. Just a shame that there is maybe only one moment on each track where it hits those heights.

Phenomenal record from the band, likely my favourite they’ve released. I may be the best track of the year with its circular feel and dense instrumentation
