What makes Sob Rock more than empty pastiche is the superb quality of the songwriting.
Sob Rock is a pleasant album whose thematic '80s affections add some stylistic flair to Mayer's laid-back songs.
Sob Rock is the sound of a man alone in his success. Even if this is one of John Mayer’s stronger albums, the whole thing feels self-consciously minor.
It’s genuinely enjoyable. Fairly forgettable. A pleasant enough middle-lane trip down what Mayer – with knowing cliché – calls “the highway of dreams”.
If anything, Sob Rock achieves its sonic goals too well and is so blatantly dated that it doesn’t have any charm. Mayer comes off not as a tribute to his heroes but more just him being a copycat.
Look I didn’t hate this but I would say that it’s definitely the ridiculously tasteful guitar work by John Mayer that’s carrying the entire album.
Look, Sob Rock’ has a vibe for sure and knows how to stay in it’s own lane but absolutely feels at it’s most meaningful when the moody blues guitar moments come to light and are allowed to shine but for such a guitar-centric album and artist these moments are too few and far between.
