The sequel to 2014’s beloved Black Metal is a brief but thrilling project from the mercurial artist, featuring the most approachable music of his career.

PopMatters

Slight but rich in tonal complexities, Dean Blunt’s Black Metal 2 is another musical puzzle box from the enigmatic London musician.

Beats Per Minute

One often loses a sense of location and chronological time, transported into a sublime realm, Blunt reveling in understated craft, melancholic freedom, and undiluted authenticity.

The Needle Drop

Sonically, Black Metal 2 tends to revisit its predecessor's A-side, with even darker and terser results.

Dean Blunt has decided to bless our ears once more with the sequel to his critically-acclaimed nocturnal masterpiece "BLACK METAL". Seven years later, Dean has landed on a pristine new sound focused on the allure of the guitar.

Look, I love Dean Blunt. He's one of my favorite artists of all time. That's just a fact. His nonchalant delivery mixed with odd minimalist experimentation and some really esoteric commentary makes for a unique niche. Currently, Dean Blunt is my second ... read more

A new champion for modern malaise

Dean Blunt is currently most well known for his work as part of the duo Hype Williams and, more recently, the side project Blue Iverson. But in 2014 Blunt released one of the most interesting and genre-subversive pieces of his career with Black Metal. A 50+ minute ramble through Jangle Pop, Post-Punk, Indie Folk, Drone, Dub, Experimental Hip Hop and many others all smushed together into the loose collage terms of Art Pop and Hypnagogic Pop.

In the 7 years ... read more

Following up such a revolutionary album is hard. Black Metal, while definitely the most popular Dean Blunt release, deserves all the accolades it has received. Dean's twisted, amateurish approach to hypnagogic pop, R&B, hip-hop and singer-songwriter balladry is nothing short of hypnotic, abrasive and often confusing, but at its core, is incredibly gratifying and nuanced, rewarding with its endless obtuseness. Since 2014, Dean has been nothing short of prolific, releasing multiple projects ... read more

The original black metal has always been an album that I’ve struggled with, despite loving a handful of highlights from it. So when its sequel was announced, I was intrigued to see if it would surpass my expectations. And considering this albums significantly shorter length and change in sound, I was definitely hoping it would hit harder. And by god I think it does! The shorter length really does help, as well as the more focused and luscious sound. Definitely going to return to Black ... read more

n 2014, Dean Blunt released one of my personal favorite albums in art pop, or "hypnagogic pop", if you feel so inclined, of the 2010s titled Black Metal, which was some of the most texturally advanced and hypnotic releases in the genre. Not only is Dean at last releasing his first solo album under his own name since that album, but Black Metal 2 is also clearly a direct sequel to its predecessor. I was initially disappointed to see that after 7 years, the sequel was only 23 minutes, ... read more
