Who would have thought that psychedelic rock fused so well with alternative rock and hardcore punk. Huh.

There weren’t too many albums in the mid 80s that really came close to Dinosaur’s sound and that’s saying a lot due to the fact that it was released in a time of experimentation in sound and delivery. You can hear Dinosaur Jr.’s hardcore roots pulsing through these songs and it feels unique and exciting, even if the record loses its steam in random areas. It most definitely is an interesting debut for a very interesting group.

If we lived in a world where the Meat Puppets were as big as the Beatles, this album would have been enormously successful. Dinosaur Jr.'s cowpunk debut is kind of quirky but definitely a good listen. There are moments of intense punk ferocity, there are moments of country-punk weirdness (it still blows my mind that this fusion exists and that its kind of awesome) and there are some genuinely great moments here ('Forget the Swan', 'Bulbs of Passion') but there's a real lack of sonic variation ... read more
