Low's Newest Release "Hey What" Will Leave You with a Bare Bones Sensation.

Something lays in the glitchy landscape. It’s a fuzzy, inconceivable blob of polygons, completely untouched by human sight. We know something is there, but we are so apprehensive that we become numb to the fear. Low’s “Hey What” evokes just that: an incomprehensible fear.

And yes, that was just my reaction. “Hey… what?”

Low’s last work, “Double ... read more

Three years after the release of Low's most career-redefining album "Double Negative" (which sports their best cover), we get their third outing w BJ Burton.

"HEY WHAT".

Ofc, I could drone on and on like everyone else whenever some exciting and anticipated album drops on AOTY. Cause that always happens. And it's filled with numerous paragraphs. So I'll instead talk about my experience leading up to this.

When "Days Like These" hit as a single, I was unsure of ... read more

A lot of bands have been compared to My Bloody Valentine over the years, largely because they were trying desperately to sound like them.

well i guess it's not for everyone, it's nice but very tedious at the same time and i felt very bored listening to it sorry.

I don't do this. Give an album a perfect score without letting it age first. Originally, I gave Double Negative a 96, back in 2018, and just recently bumped it to 100 after much deliberation. Hey What, while not necessarily better than DN, it certainly expands the textures Alan and Mimi employed on DN as well as Ones & Sixes.

Months ago, BJ Burton, the producer Low has worked with for 3 albums now, tweeted that this new record would make you feel like you're hearing guitar for the first ... read more

it is 1:13 pm as I begin writing this review. the number 13 has popped up everywhere in the past few days, so much so that I probably should have waited until tomorrow (the 13th) to post this. I stayed in Room 113 in a hotel for about a week. I walked around with exactly 13 dollars in my pocket for a few days. this is Low's 13th full-length LP. it is their best.

Low's experimentalism always serves an ideal and is never gratuitous. they remind me of later Scott Walker in this regard, with a ... read more

Três anos depois, contudo, a banda entrega a continuação do sucesso do excepcional Double Negative, o HEY WHAT.

Given that Low have remained relatively quiet since their 2018 release Double Negative they had admittedly slipped my mind prior to the release of Hey What. I can't say I was heavily anticipating a new release from the group, even though what I had heard from them fascinated me, but it's common to take for granted a group that have been silently churning out music since the mid-90's.

But then I started their 13th album, the opener White Horses shifting in and out of digital space, and in less ... read more

Almost 30 years into their career, and they're still making some of the most daring, immersive and complex compositions out there. Seriously, one of my all-time favourite bands

A little bit less experimental than double negative. Low always changing you could say but that we don't always say is that low not only change their sound. Low gets better in their sounds and this is for me one of the best examples. More accurate, more linear in a structure. Great mix of the patented white/industrial/folk noise that they invited in last album with that fantasy melodically voice. As a big wave of something that you want to get wet. Low gets better and for me an amazing band. Me ... read more

"all night" é mais uma ótima música do ... read more

I think I've finally found my AOTY! So inventive and unique and hard-hitting. I will always love Low’s harmonies and love that most of the tracks feature vocals. Name someone else that’s been expanding their sonic universe like this 25+ years later - I’ll wait

Belief—grazes like white horses. Reconciled to the irreconcilable. Caught in a gap, an elliptical gyre, "the cracked lookingglass of a servant". WHAT. Looked at me with those smokeblue mobile eyes. Omphalos. Still, obligated to a horizon so far away—just between us.

All Night reminds me of Set My Heart on Fire Immediately by Perfume Genius, which is definitely a good thing. I appreciate the different noise/ambient sections in here. Although I think some of those sections go on a little too long. But for the most part, HEY WHAT transforms noise into abrasive beauty.

Low should well be described as masters of texture at this point, from their tense yet sparse early years to their latest wall-of-sound aesthetic. Hey What furthers the harsh noise influence of Double Negative, resulting in some of their most incredible work yet ("After Night" and the angelic "Hey"). Yet while that record magically achieved entrancing beauty in disorientation, Hey What's reverb-heavy production makes it feel somewhat more singular and exhausting.

Low is a band that is rarely mentioned in conversations regarding to consistent bands, which I think is a travesty. Few artists in any genre can claim to have a discography as solid as Low, let alone one that spans 28 years. And that form is continued on the abrasive and immediate Hey What. Taking the electronic leanings of their 2018 masterpiece Double Negative and leaning heavily into the noise elements, Hey What lacks the intimacy and thematic unification its predecessor had, but still ... read more

Hey, What sees Low continuing to experiment with noise and industrial sounds, just like what we saw on their last record Double Negative. I found this to be a slight improvement since the vocals are more upfront and aren't drenched in static. While it could've been a bit more consistent, this is nonetheless one of the most ambitious projects I've heard this year. It sounds like Nine Inch Nails producing for Beach House in my opinion.

Bass Boosted Meme: The Album

Tried this out and I'm definitely in the camp that doesn't quite get the hype. The songs flow together well, and the vocals sound great, but the absence of something truly palatable leaves me wondering what this was all about. I know the bass boosted memes were funny a few years ago, but did making those memes into an album really just resonate with everyone but me? It's very experimental in nature, just not exciting.
