Uncut

BRM's second is a dazzling stylistic display on which Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon are joined by talented friends whose pristine singing rubs against Vernon's treated vocals and glitchy grooves to consistently throw off sparks.

Sputnikmusic

In the long run, How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last? will be remembered as a success of chemistry and careful balance.

80
Mojo

A warmly autumnal, subtly adventurous set, with Dessner and Vernon's generous, uncontrived, communal approach completing the tightrope all such collaborative projects must walk, delivering a work profoundly greater than the sum of its parts.

80
Northern Transmissions
Compassion permeates these tunes, something you can hear in every voice that sings on the album, in every musical note, and by the end of an impressive collection of songs (15 altogether!) you’ve gone on quite an emotional, experimental indie pop journey. Something that holds up to each of the artists’ main projects.

NME

The epitome of the figurative “beating heart” that formed Big Red Machine, this is an autumnal album, one that lays the duo bare emotionally, and one that frequently calls for reflection.

70
Slant Magazine

How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? is certainly far less insular than its predecessor ... Here, a full stable of guest vocalists and songwriting collaborators results in a much broader musical palette.

70
DIY

There’s a terrific bounty to be enjoyed in the centre of the Vernon-Dessner Venn diagram.

70
AllMusic

While How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?'s mellow poignancy is likely to stick more than any of its songs; its pathos is genuine and immersive.

70
Pitchfork

Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner’s expansive side project embraces new guests and familiar sounds, but sometimes feels lost in its own pleasant fog.

60
The Line of Best Fit
The songs do seem to come from the same universe but, for an album which belongs most to the realm of storytelling folk-music, it’s too disparate to evoke the personal connection people tend to tune in to that music for.
60
The Guardian

The problem is that it occasionally sounds like Dessner and Vernon were simply enjoying themselves too much while assembling their friends’ work. The album lasts over an hour, and somehow feels even longer, perhaps because its tone never changes.

60
Under The Radar

Unfortunately, barring a few standouts, most of the guests add little spice to the proceedings, assuming they are even detectable at all.

50
Loud and Quiet

Over the course of an inconsistent hour, the lasting sadness is the ease with which Big Red Machine has waived its original goal; they’ve found an unclimbed mountain, and given up to sit on the first bench with a nice view.

This is like the art pop equivalent of a Metro Boomin album.

ALBUM OF THE MONTH: August 2021

★★★★★★★★☆☆
8.5/10

The album that flows like water.

I honestly didn't expect this record to turn out to be better than Big Red Machine's debut, especially after hearing the singles that haven't captivated me that much, but hearing 'How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last' as a whole I can say that it definitely beats their self-titled release, not only in terms of musicality, but also lyricism and consistency. The features are all on point, ... read more

"A junção de dois artistas grandiosos parece uma experiência mágica, os principais de respectivas bandas The National e Bon Iver se encontram novamente em um projeto radiante"

Desde de seu primeiro álbum de estúdio, muitas coisas mudaram, pra um álbum de começo a final composto e desenvolvido de jeito sem nenhum feat, passou ser agora cheio e de muitos feats complementares, a verdade é que Justin que comanda os vocais da ... read more
