Mercurial World reacts like a real fairy tale, it is a colorful, mysterious, wonderful and incredibly seductive adventure. There's no doubt that this debut album can compete for a top spot this year.

I saw the future when I listened to Mercurial World and I am completely reassured. It's been a few years now that the world of pop music is changing in order to make the genre evolve towards new paths and finally it's almost mandatory to think that it will be done by Electronic. I want to prove ... read more

'Mercurial World' is an album crafted by minds that understand exactly how synthpop functions. The cadence of the songs goes beyond expectations, like they were made using every single aspect commonly known about the genre, the experimentation doesn't stay too far ahead, the use of guitars are always different but so are a lot of other instruments. The transitions are quite incredible, like seriously.... it took me places. It's a record that brings enthusiasm, emotions, intensity, reflections, ... read more

Get in, loser; we’re going to Mercurial World!

Prior to hearing the singles to this album, I wrongly assumed Magdalena Bay was just another throwaway pop group. However, I still decided to give them a chance with the track “Chaeri”, and it honestly blew me away! It didn’t do anything groundbreaking or new, but it’s execution felt so lively and grandiose that I could care less. The band continued to lure me into the hype with each new single being consistently ... read more

Absolutely amazing. Without any prior experience with Magdalena Bay, their definitive sound presents itself in self-effacing enchantment right from the opening title track. The experience truly lives up to the album name - 1. volatile in styles, playfully hopping from sound to sound, drenched in synth and nifty rhythms. 2. sprightly, full of congenial energy delivered from an alluring character. It's one of those albums which gives great joy to both easy and dedicated listening - You couldn't ... read more

8.7 - Amazing

A never-ending journey of bubbly, synth-pop bliss.

Magdalena have arrived with their debut album, after around 2 years of anticipation. Although I am extremely late to hope on the Magdalena Bay train, over the past couple of days I started to prepare myself for this album by listening to Killshot, a song that I adore. I was hoping throughout the album, we’d get fed with more synth porn and heavenly vocals, and that’s exactly what was delivered on Mercurial ... read more

Bursting on to the scene with one hell of a bang, synthpop duo Magdalena Bay's debut record "Mercurial World" is bubbly, colourful and incredibly easy to immerse yourself in. Unlike most, from their very first record, they establish a sound that, as well as being addictive front to back, is indefinitely theirs. Throughout the record's whole runtime, Magdalena Bay let you know whose world you're indulging in, using this to make a statement about their new standing in the synthpop ... read more

I’m missing something.

I have no prior experience with Magdalena Bay, frankly my life is so busy these days that I probably wouldn’t have gotten around to listening to this album and inevitably reviewing it for a while. But I always take time to give priority to albums that are garnering a lot of praise, and god damn this got a lot of praise (and as a debut album nonetheless). So it’s pretty disappointing to say that after multiple listens I only feel lightly positive but ... read more

Definitely one of the best album covers of the year.
Literally no skips from front to back. Made me ascend into the stratosphere.
The transitions from track to track, the diverse but balanced genre influences, the INSANE production, the incredible melodies, the overall aesthetic, all of this makes me comfortable with saying it's one of the best pop records of the year. I'll have to give it a couple more listens to make sure tho.

It is the first time I have listened to Magdalena Bay, and the truth is that it was enjoyable to listen to. I love the way they bring synthpop to their songs which for me are quite catchy and I really enjoyed them.

Favorite tracks: Mercurial World, Dawning Of The Season, Secrets, Chaeri, Halfway, Hysterical Us, Prophecy, Follow The Leader, Dreamcatching, The Beggining.

Least favorite: Something For 2.

out of all the genres the mainstream scene normally focuses on, i think synthpop has the most untapped depth by far. just considering the production side, an endless amount of amazing instrumentals can be made while carrying the strong, danceable beat that we all know and love. this newest magdalena bay record is proof of all this, though it kind of fell under the radar during the single releases. i’m glad it’s getting the love it deserves, and the tracks themselves are catchy ... read more

Magdalena made a very complete album, with its own aesthetic and instrumental, songs with a lot of personality, and the highlight of the LP… the transitions that brought the album to life the most!!

I expected a little more from the last song being that the LP has a very experimental and controversial atmosphere very similar to many albums by Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek in several songs, one of them is Chaeri that at the beginning I thought it would be very meh but it turned out to ... read more

From The End to The Beginning, it is surprisingly satisfying to listen.
There are so many attractive moments that it is difficult to pick 3 highlights.
As someone said, the vocals are reminiscent of Grimes, but the music brought only good parts of several synth-pop bands.
More critics should open their eyes to this album.

Highlights : Secrets (Your Fire), The Beginning, Domino

Easily the most intoxicating pop album I've heard all year.

Without prior experience with Magdalena Bay, I can't say much about their history, but one thing is certain: they've already carved a lane for themselves in this pop landscape. This album, from the very first track, is riddled with infectiously danceable grooves, astoundingly vibrant arrays of synths, and incredibly sticky melodies. What really strikes me about this record is just how distinct it sounds despite sticking to the rules ... read more

Incredibly consistent across the entire project, full of bright synths and solid grooves. This is a well studied synth pop album, with a polished and sweet execution. I'm kinda loving this one

Holy fuck this flows so well, I didn't notice the song changed half the time
First half is almost perfect, second part is pretty great but does drop sometimes, even if rarely ("Follow the Leader" is kind of a low point for me), but there's still amazing stuff like "Hysterical Us", "Dreamcatching" and especially "The Beginning" (probably my favorite with "You Lose!")

This is just such bubbly fun from track to track just bop after bop some tracks are slightly overblown but for the most part the production is classy clean and futuristic. Hysterical us is a groovy track mercurial world is an immersive explosion of sounds. The other songs are great too exept for prophecy the vocals are not that standout they sound like a lot of other artists but the instrumentals more then make up for that solid release
