Even with Sarlo’s fingerprints everywhere on this record, it doesn’t withdraw Hovvdy’s DIY, lo-fi tape deck roots. In turn, their collaboration achieves a sharp folk-rock sound that’s drunk on precision and layered minimalism.

True Love is a loving snapshot of what Hovvdy holds dear in the present and their excitement for the future is infectious.

It’s a beautiful and comforting experience.

While Hovvdy was already known for their cloudy, window-seat climates, here, these types of extra touches produce a dreamy, soft-focus feel that keeps feet ungrounded alongside lyrics of heightened affection.

No Ripcord

Like joy and true love itself, Hovvdy sounds best here when they use a broader palette without getting too far outside the lines—bringing more to bear and letting in quite a bit more light.

Austin based indie pop duo Hovvdy come through with a very pleasant fourth album True Love and hone in on their self described sound ‘pillow core’. This is an interesting project!
It’s a cool blend of contemporary Indie Folk and 90s Alt Rock wish some dashes of Slowcore that occasionally makes for a catchy solid song or two.

This album is nothing groundbreaking but it for the most part is a fun blend of genres that makes for a pretty chill listen. There are a couple of tracks that don’t really go anywhere and kind of begin to bore me, or just generally use outdated tropes that I didn’t like when other songs from the 90s ... read more
The latest album from Austin’s HOVVDY isn’t their boldest set of songs or even anything wildly new in their catalog. But hearing this set of lush, endearing tunes at the beginning of the Fall season is scratching so many itches. Outside of that, its business as usual from HOVVDY, but truthfully that’s not a bad thing.
