Few people could pull this off with such flying colors as Sturgill Simpson, with his proven integrity, honesty, and talent. I thoroughly enjoyed listening through The Ballad of Dood and Jaunita.

Mojo

The only unsatisfactory element of The Ballad Of Dood & Juanita is that it's too short, and how many concept albums can boast that? And if Sturgill Simpson was to spend the rest of his career purely as a bluegrass artist, well, that would be just fine too.

Uncut

It's a story-in-instalments country record, and brilliantly realised.

NME

‘The Ballad of Dood & Juanita’ is not just a faithful, fun celebration of a traditional sound, but that of a traditional form, too.

Pitchfork

By turns romantic, playful, sympathetic, and solemn, The Ballad of Dood and Juanita is a compelling update on American frontier mythmaking, delivered by a band good enough to push lovingly against genre conventions.

The Ballad of Dood & Juanita, is his most rugged and resilient yet. Simpson’s third release in just the past twelve months, it’s yet another example of his unfettered ambition, a concept album that Simpson himself describes as β€œa simple tale of either redemption or revenge.”

Rolling Stone

Both the most natural and most baffling record he’s ever made.

After the extreme left turn taken on his rock inspired album Sound & Fury (2019), Sturgill Simpson has comfortably settled into a bluegrass phase of his career, as he had a fun time revisiting past material on Cuttin’ Grass Vol 1 & 2 and now comes through with a complete story album in The Ballad of Dood & Juanita. I instantly love this since it reminds me of classic country albums like those of Willie Nelson (Willie even lets Trigger cut loose for a solo on ... read more

It's a cute listen, some of the instrumentation and narrative is a little corny, but there are some sweet diddys and tunes here, fun for one listen, but not nearly as long-lasting as Metamodern Sounds or Sailor's Guide.

If there is sth. like organic music grown on historic ground it sounds like this western opera.
More grown up and solid bluegrass than Billy Strings.
Billy´s juvenile emotions hit me more but this is still a rather beautiful listen.
Juanita is wonderful example of its beauty.
