The Captain is angry on "Doc at the Radar Station", his penultimate record. Some consider this his greatest triumph that wasn't Trout Mask Replica (or in spite of); it certainly is remarkable. The band is in top form here and the poetry is just as surreal, but with an aggressive undertone that implies Beefheart is sick of the music shtick. This was a foreshadowing to his next project, but as for this record, it is quite excellent.
Beefheart's penultimate record, "Doc at the Radar Station", is a more candid revitalization of what made his classic records good - that adventurous personality Don had! Not the embarrassingly commercial avant-Kenny G works he produced prior, for sure. Despite having a lack of real consistency, this record still features his typical narrative vocals and some very danceable rhythms. It also includes Coil's iconic lyric "please fuck my mind for good".
A near masterpiece. On this album, Beefheart gives us some of his most angry and abrasive material. It's almost punk at times, and it's spoken word elements -- which would become far more prevalent on "Ice Cream for Crow" -- add to the darker, bitter tone of this album. "Making Love to a Vampire with a Monkey on My Knee" is one of the rawest songs ever written.
