CRITIC REVIEWS

The Young Folks

Mainstream Sellout offers potent pop-punk, dripping with reckless dynamism and provocative, cathartic lyrics.

80
NME
Colson Baker has gone from underrated rapper to bonafide rock star, but this sequel to 2020's 'Tickets To My Downfall' is no complacent victory lap.
60
Clash

This desire to bite back at those pushing him out of the scene has inadvertently dampened his spark - too distracted by the haters, this release forgets to give the fans more of what they love.

60
The Guardian

It’s all well-trodden stuff, and Kelly adds nothing new, but Mainstream Sellout is so much fun that – as the title suggests – it’s easy to leave your integrity behind and mosh along.

60
Kerrang!

Machine Gun Kelly’s detractors will likely have you believe Mainstream Sellout is terrible. It isn’t, but nor is the fire burning as bright as it once was.

58
Pitchfork
The enfant terrible of the pop-rock revival wades deeper into the genre, coming back with even less than before.
50
AllMusic

Mainstream Sellout feels mostly like a middling attempt to further cross over into pop-punk, this time lighter on ideas and cohesion.

50
Rolling Stone
His buzzsaw-bubblegum can be entertaining. But he needs to realize that “introspective” songwriting is about more than just yelling about how much you suck.
40
The Independent

Dull album wraps generic angst around formulaic grunge-pop.

40
The Telegraph

MGK’s intentions feel shallow. Mainstream Sellout portrays MGK as a victim of success; it gleams like a fancy ornament on an industry merry-go-round – then the music hits you, not with a roar, but a very loud meh.

Sputnikmusic

Mainstream Sellout proves that you don’t need musical talent to make it big in the music scene. You just need a whole lot of money to hire an excellent marketing team. Colson Baker is the voice of a generation that will realise his voice is pretty dreadful approximately seven months from now.

Mainstream bullshit

Yeah mgk such a great idea to create an album filled with semi-radio friendly rap and pop rock songs full of edgy "i'm not ok i took some drugs i'm high i wanna kill myself" lines. and congrats on making emo girl part 2 except this time she's a drug dealer, dude you fall in love with every girl you see what's this virgin ass songwriting. What's next? You fall in love with the homeless drug addict girl? Oh also great idea to get some rappers with worse careers and ... read more

I approached Tickets To My Downfall with optimism. When characteristics of pop punk culture started showing up in the Soundcloud rap space, making the leap from mainstream hip-hop to pop punk became less of a stretch. It's exciting to see bigger names bring this style of music to a wider array of fans. As someone who has listened to an above-average amount of pop punk, I thought TTMD was a purely "okay" album. There were some fun, interesting tracks, but nothing special--a 50 or 60 ... read more
