A day with more Elbow is a good day

It would be no small claim for me to describe myself as an Elbow fan. Their wonderful mix of subtly progressive rock with strong pop sensibilities that could hook someone in immediately, yet still have plenty of hidden joys worth many repeated listens. At the centre of the group is Guy Garvey, whose vocals are invitingly warm and have a surprisingly large range. His lovely (and occasionally cheeky) lyrics are wonderfully poetic, but direct and down-to-earth ... read more

This may or may not be a controversial opinion among Elbow fans, but personally I feel the band had started to repeat itself after the release of 2008's The Seldom Seen Kid. There were still classics on each of the three subsequent releases, but these albums were, to me, often lacking in consistency and new musical ideas. Elbow had gotten a little too artistically comfortable, perhaps, even if Guy Garvey's poetic lyrics always remained above reproach. I don't know what changed after Little ... read more

There's no bad track here per se but the album just doesn't make much of an impression on me compared to their last two albums and their classic work. The best tracks here are the singles in my opinion.

Favourite Tracks: Flying Dream 1, Is It A Bird, Six Words, The Seldom Seen Kid*

Sleepy, daydreamy, lazy day background music that's beautiful and sentimental lyrically and vocally; but unfortunately overall the album is too sluggish

Standouts: Six Words, What Am I Without You

Dropouts: Calm and Happy, Red Sky Radio (Baby Baby Baby)

Mejores temas: Come On, Blue, The Seldom Seen Kid y What Am I Without You.

With The Seldom Seen Kid being my only exposure to Elbow, I was interested in this album and how did the band evolved with time, and while they haven't lost their beauty and elegance, their sound is more refined and mature, yet, less interesting, but I was surprised with this project, considering the initial reception it's getting, and I'm eager to check their whole discography.
