Once "Please Please Me" rocketed to number one, the Beatles rushed to deliver a debut album, bashing out Please Please Me in a day. Decades after its release, the album still sounds fresh, precisely because of its intense origins.
It's a blueprint of everything the Beatles would ever do, mixing up doo-wop, country, R&B, girl groups, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Tin Pan Alley into their own exuberant sound.
While it may not earn direct comparison to the band’s truest masterpieces, Please Please Me stands as an insightful snapshot of an evolving band at a pivotal moment in time, right before anyone had quite the idea of how big they’d really become.
Although you get a sense of the energy and vitality that was such a key part of the band, something else that immediately stands out is the fact that it doesn’t really bear much resemblance to their later albums, due to the fact that it can only really be described as a pure pop album, steering well away from the more complex, ambitious music that characterised their later career.
Please Please Me reflects the wide range of The Beatles' tastes.
