Might have to retroactively lower my ratings of everything else I’ve heard this year because ‘The Overload’ is that much better than all of it. I figured this album would be quite good when I heard the EP and singles last year, but this blew my expectations out of the water. Yard Act dropped the best post-punk album I’ve heard in years. I’m going to be replaying this all day. Also, “Tall Poppies” is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.

I know I would get a lot of hate but hear me out
I am going to explain why I disliked this album and the critics are hyping bs like this

Predictable - The song structure are the same throughout the entire album, it gets boring very quickly
Lyrics - The songwriting is some of the worst I have ever heard, the spoken word just makes the album quality decreases, the lyrics are so boring its makes a chore to sit through
Vocals: I really disliked the vocals, the vocals are very annoying and ... read more

Guys I gave a post punk album less than a 70 oooooooh haha

So this is my first review for 2022 releases, and I decided to check this out because I love post punk. I think I can definitely see the complaints with this one though. I don’t think it’s bad, but kinda bland compared to most of the post punk stuff I’ve heard and it just ends up being aggressively okay. The instrumentation is okay and it overall just doesn’t take that extra step. The structures to the songs are ... read more

While post-punk isn't a genre that always prided itself on its complexity, the sheer amount of trailblazing bands releasing music in the genre in recent years has certainly made it feel like up-and-coming post-punk bands have an extra hurdle to overcome as expectations are higher than ever. I myself have in recent years brushed aside albums from bands like Shame and Viagra Boys as I didn't find they brought forward anything that made them unique and stand-out among contemporaries and while in a ... read more

The Yard Act debut has arrived and it is... exactly what was expected. Although making good on expectations is not a bad thing, and this first record comes with its fair share of quality, there is even more value to going above and beyond, which Yard Act does not do on "The Overload". It is fun, catchy and well-performed, but lacks a ten-minute epic that shows the band's ability to write up an interesting song structure and a long-lasting narrative. Right now, we can look forward to ... read more

Some spoken word bullshit that critics lose their mind over.

This is just 2022's "For Those I Love"

Another year, yet more UK post-punk records that do absolutely nothing for me and leave me so painfully bored that I can't even make it past the first few tracks.

Guess I'll just rant for a bit, because the state of post-punk at the moment is an absolute mess. On one hand, you have some incredible acts in Squid and Black Country, New Road, which leave me stupidly excited for the future of rock music as a whole... but then you have the likes of Fontaines D.C., shame, Sleaford Mods, and now Yard ... read more

While being fairly sonically unimpressive on a lot of tracks here (they tend to stick to the very basic post-punk-tinged instrumentals throughout the project), I can't deny how happy this album makes me. This band basically has every correct take on how dumb capitalism and corporatism (which are described as the same thing in this album because they are) tend to be as a concept, and isn't afraid to express their takes on this in the most hilarious and witty ways possible. The delivery of these ... read more

Finally, British culture. I still can't believe they got THE Frank Gallagher on vocals for the whole album. Seriously, the lyrics and vocal delivery sounds exactly like the drunken, but surprisingly insightful, political commentary of the local council estate smackhead mixed with your dodgy uncle, whose just got up for the karaoke after his sixth or seventh pint. What could be more punk than that? Granted, the instrumentals are bland and critics are overrating the hell out of this.

Yard Act show a load of potential on this debut album which, as a cause of its lack of subtlety and originality, ends up being quite a mediocre listen. 'The Overload' presents some interesting political satire and stances, but you can't make a good album just by being a socialist. The band fail pretty spectacularly at developing anything intriguing sonically, instead going for the typical post-punk style that we have heard so much of in the past year but executing it a lot worse than other ... read more

In an now oversaturated market, Yard Act don't quite do enough to set themselves apart from the crowd, but still manage to craft a strong debut. What really shines on this album is frontman James Smith, whose spoken word delivery coupled with his ability to slip in and out of different characters is fun and feels fresh. And though the lyrics are undeniably very British, they are packed with enough biting wit that someone across the world such as myself can see the amusement. Where this album ... read more

... read more

Squid from Wish

I guess Yard Act are a new Post Punk band with the current golden era of Post-Punk going on. Im just gonna get this outta the way, I went into this with open ears and an open mind, but all I can say is that I really don’t like this. Yard Act are what happen if you take a band like Squid, strip them of the things that make them unique, and force them to make an album. I find the vocals to be obnoxious as hell, the singer lacks charisma, the instrumentals are ... read more

Uninspired and redundant with such a vague sound, it was predictable after the second song. Don't understand the admiration behind this album because it just feels so empty to me, but maybe some people like this simple repetition?

"Tall Poppies" is worth a nod though

So, I’m going to keep this short, since I don’t have much to say about this album. This is fine. It is a fine album. The Overlord is the debut album by Yard Act, who are a post punk band who I haven’t heard much from before listening to this, and after listening to this… I didn’t hate it. The production is fine. It is mixed well and you can hear everything clearly. The instrumentals are fine. The vocals aren’t terrible. The lyrics aren’t terrible. I ... read more

A couple times every year over the past few, a new boring spoken word post-punk band drops their debut album and multiple critics go mental over what they think is the future of rock music and (almost) every time, nobody else cares.
