As laudably impressive it is as a freshman undertaking, Gish also has its hands overfilled.
Any of the Smashing Pumpkins albums from the 90’s can have a valid argument for being their best. Personally more of a Siamese Dream guy, but Gish is a fantastic album that highlights what the band is capable of instrumentally.
The debut album for the Pumpkins was one hell of a strong one. Gish is a very original fusion of alt rock, metal and psychedelia, a sound that would go on to define the Pumpkins. This album was innovative as hell and ahead of it's time as it incorporated many of the popular 90's grunge elements months before it was popularized by Nirvana's Nevermind. A bit of an unpolished work in the best way possible, the instrumentals are just phenomenal and the vocals are strong here too. This is masterfully put together for a debut, it's not sloppy, it doesn't have a weaker half, it's solid all the way through. THIS is how you make a rock record, this is exactly how.
