About to Die manages not only to seem vital in comparison to the other Dirty Projectors’ art projects of this year, but also stirs hunger for the 25 other songs from these sessions that will hopefully see an eventual release.

Listening to About to Die, the amount of effort Dirty Projectors put into Magellan only becomes more obvious.

The 405

For diehard fans of the band this will be a particularly welcome addition, providing a canvas for five experiments on the tried and tested Dirty Projectors modus operandi.

Consequence of Sound

About to Die offers a bite-sized take of the entirety of Swing Lo Magellan, encapsulating its strengths in four songs.

An under-appreciated collection of six tracks showing Dirty Projector's fiddling for the perfect melodies, rather than percussion like on Bitte Orca. While You're Here has one of the most beautiful solo violin parts I've ever heard in music, quietly stirring in the background while Dave sings about what it means to be alive.

Favorite Tracks: While You're Here, Desire to Love, About to Die, Here til it Says I'm Not
