On what is effectively his debut solo album, Olly Alexander revels in the sound of pent-up party energy.
While Night Call builds nicely upon Years & Years' indie electronic roots, it primarily feels like a new beginning for Alexander as he boldly embraces his pop future.
Not only are they two members lighter ... but that second album’s convoluted conceptual framework has been shaken off in favour of 14 sweat-soaked bangers that focus on pent-up carnal desires.
‘Night Call’ is [a] record that celebrates the joyous power of the club, but underneath almost every pulsing beat is a barely-concealed ode to getting your rocks off in some form too.
Years & Years’ Night Call is a sexy, fun, at-times exhilarating album that looks with affection at the music of the 1980s but adds a smart, fresh update.
Night Call is a hi-fi album primed for neon flooring, and perhaps that’s where Olly Alexander was always meant to be.
Night Call isn’t a deviation from past releases but rather an amplification – the songs are more maximal, more bombastic and unapologetically poppier than before.
Too often ... good-not-great tunes can’t quite make up for generic song structures and performances that seem to have lost a certain charismatic shine during the downsizing operation.
Quite frankly, it gets a little exhausting. By the time you get to the more nuanced 20 Minutes, a percussive, instantly infectious tune about the build-up to a romantic connection, you might need paracetamol.
The music is fun and easygoing ... When the pace drops the results become more mixed.
Try as he might, Olly Alexander fails to deliver a gay dance-pop album worth remembering.
This thing is probably a 69 but caught me in a good mood today. With each Y&Y release I think more that the debut album was a bit of a fluke.
[eng] The project that started as a trio, Years & Years, had everything to be great, going from the alternative to the bigger picture. But by losing two members and starting a more intro-specific journey of lead singer Olly Alexander, the band loses its roots and forgets any passing that they had in the quality aspect. While in earlier albums we had present and striking singles, in this work we are absorbed in endless boring tracks that have NOTHING to differentiate them from the current ... read more
