A.V. Club

Covers ... once again balances introspection with outward displays of communal emotion.

80
Uncut

There is a dreamy, unconscious quality to the way Marshall inhabits a song.

80
Mojo

This album again showcases Marshall's exceptional ability to burrow right into the marrow of a song.

80
Loud and Quiet

Covers is a reverent testimony to the songs of Marshall’s life.

80
Dork

Be it the noir glamour of ‘I Had a Dream, Joe’ or the lullaby serenity of ‘These Days’, ‘Covers’ showcases a timely ability to slow down and take a moment for yourself.

80
NME

Often, cover records are dismissed as simply a bit of fun or as an indulgent aside to an artists’ original output, but when Cat Power does it, it’s nothing less than soul-nourishing.

80
The Irish Times

It is emblematic of how, like many great interpreters, she can successfully reach into others’ work to draw further nuance.

77
Pitchfork

Featuring songs by Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Nick Cave, and more, Chan Marshall’s third collection of covers is her widest ranging yet, illustrating her talent for radical reinvention.

76
Northern Transmissions

They are all heavy songs, and you’d imagine no less from Cat Power. And they are all beautiful and raw and acoustic guitar heavy, as you’d imagine from Cat Power as well.

70
AllMusic

Covers is a treat for fans, and reaffirms that Marshall can find the Cat Power -- as well as new meanings -- in the music that moves her.

60
The Guardian

Power chooses her songs with impeccable taste but her uniformly breathy cover versions rob them of a distinctive edge.

60
The Observer

This might well be the most well-rounded and sophisticated of her three outings of homage. Marshall’s tendency to abbreviate and deconstruct songs is one of her outstanding assets as an interpreter.

60
musicOMH

As ever with Marshall’s covers project, it’s a mixed bag, but there’s more than enough here to keep Cat Power fans satisfied until her next album of original material comes along.

40
The Arts Desk

Marshall’s choice of songs on Covers is quite interesting, it is just unfortunate that her approach to them isn’t similarly engaging.

yes, it's a little sleepy, and new music from her would be preferred, but there are some redeeming qualities here. for one, it is her third album of covers (or predominantly covers, counting Jukebox, which had two originals) but the songs chosen here must be personal favorites rather than familiar songs pandering to the listener-as-consumer (as was the case with The Covers Record from 20 years ago).*** with a couple of exceptions, the songs are not well-known or often covered, and that's a good ... read more
