Pet Sounds ‘77: It’s weird, it’s amateour-ish and most importantly it’s 100% Brian Wilson.

After the huge success of the 15 Big Ones/Brian’s Back era which had their biggest single since Good Vibrations and biggest charting album since Beach Boys Party! (yup it charted higher than Pet Sounds…), it was clear that simply having Brian as the producer was enough to sell.

One of the most underappreciated albums of the ’70s and in Beach Boys discography. Music is colorful, catchy, idiotic, charming, and most of all fun as hell. The album has a childlike innocence that shows up in its vivid instrumentals and incredibly naive lyrics. You would think that 30 something-year-old man singing about a “Roller Skating Child” would come off as creepy, but again, it is too charming to do so. Not a terrible release like the previous two but still very boring and forgettable material. It's sad to see how far the Beach Boys fell from where they were in the mid-60s lmao.
