This is VENOM PRISON as you’ve never heard them, but at the same time they’ve never sounded more like themselves.
Erebos is a blood-boiling rampage of an album, with thoughtful scaffoldings to separate Venom Prison from the pack. They're doing so many things right, staking their claim in a genre fraught with reductive edginess.
"Erebos" is vastly more diverse than its predecessors, with more room for melody and atmosphere, but the essence of the band's sound remains the same: a wild and willful mixture of extreme metal tropes, heavy on groove but thrillingly unpredictable.
Venom Prison's Eerebos "is to Samsara what Carcass's Heartwork was to Reek Of Putrefecation": the diving line between greatness and legends.
It’s still early but it’s an incredibly safe bet that one of the best metal albums of the year is already here.
After considering the sum of all its parts, Erebos is a hell-of-a-record, feeding into all the conditions that would cater to both the mainstream world and that of a niched, more expressive take on what being defined as ‘core’ is.
It’s not fuckin’ brutal, and it’s not the kind of album you crush domestic tall boys to while raging at a neon-lit dive bar. This is a record warming its hands over a burning trash can, a record brimming with youth and all of the strange, gnarly energy that comes with it.
Solid, but the over-the-top almost operatic production elements aren’t massively to my tastes.
Fav Track: Technologies of Death
Giving this a 100 just because some guy said "nothing can top ants from up there" and gave it a 0. And I would make a joke about topping this individual's mother, but I am above that.
Everything I love about Melodeath all in one neatly packaged album! There’s not a single second wasted in this record, starting from its atmospheric build up on the intro track “Born From Chaos” to it’s “Pain of Oizys” Epic! And ending it all with its greatly climactic “Technologies of Death”. It’s a journey full of great rhythms, and amazing vocals; Vocals which I personally enjoy quite a bit:)
